Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes to You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon serves an abundance of people across Long Island. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Another unique niche that her traveling salon taps into is serving those who may have specific allergies or reactions to different products used in salons. By traveling to her clients, Eileen can ensure that they will only be surrounded by products they feel comfortable with. If you wish to get involved with Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, you can! Beginnings or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. Veterans Receive Vehicles

Two wartime veterans were recognized for their military service and gifted with vehicles donated by GEICO Insurance Company and enhanced by The Collision Centers of New York. The two veterans were honored at the Long Island Ducks Baseball Stadium during the 6:35 p.m. game on August 4th 2018 during the annual Military Appreciation Night. Local Suffolk County residents, US Navy Veteran Christopher Russel, and US Marine Veteran, Mark Davis were struggling

to do their daily tasks without a vehicle. Getting to work, going to doctor’s appointments, seeing family and having the freedom they deserve was difficult without a working vehicle. Mr. Davis and Mr. Russel were each given a vehicle at the Long Island Ducks Game during the 6th inning where fans and spectators rose and gave the two veterans a standing ovation during the presentation of the keys. Mr. Davis who was nominated by the Veterans of Foreign War received a 2014 Toyota

Wounded Warrior Project CEO Michael Linnington was also in attendance and spoke at the morning ceremony. “Councilwoman Gordon and our staff continue to raise the bar for this event every year,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “Participation keeps getting bigger and bigger, which speaks volumes about how great this event is. Thank you to the Wounded Warrior Project for being great partners and the work that they do,” he added. Joe McDonald, a building inspector with the Town, is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He, along with the help of his department, raised over $6,000 for the event before riding with his fellow Warriors. “The amount of money raised by Joe McDonald is

a testament of how much respect the people within the Town of Babylon have for our Veterans,” said Councilwoman Gordon. “In the 11 years since we have had this event, we’ve raised over a million dollars that have gone to helping Veterans who have made enormous sacrifices. As a fellow Veteran, I’m honored to organize this event each year,” she added. Over 50 Wounded Warriors led the pack of bicyclists out of Town Hall after a flyover by a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter. Residents lined the course from Sunrise Highway to the entrance of Overlook Beach, where a barbeque hosted by local emergency response departments and sponsors welcomed the riders.

The event, a 25-mile bicycle ride that begins at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and ends at Overlook Beach, has raised around one million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project in 11 years. “The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying bodies of the dead to be observed; it does not however - forbid cremation unless it has been chosen for reasons which are contrary to the Christian teachings.” Although cremation is now permitted, it does not enjoy the same value as the burial of the body. The Catholic Church strongly prefers that the body of the decease be present for its funeral rites since the presence of the body most clearly brings to mind the life and death of the person. Therefore, the recommendation of the Bishop’s Committee recommends that cremation takes place following the funeral liturgy. “The cremation remains of the body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they came.” This includes a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the matter in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport and the final disposition. Cremation is not the final disposition of the deceased. The Church plainly states cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea - from the air or on the ground or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition the church requires.
