Serving The Community For Over 25 Years
The Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center is a non-profit interfaith service that provides support for the elderly. The organization has been serving the community for over 25 years and is a cooperative of Farmingdale United Methodist Church, St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, St. Kilian’s Roman Catholic Church and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. They offer socialization and stimulation for individuals 60 years old and above with physical and/or memory impairment, generally Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. Activities they offer include arts and crafts, live entertainment, group exercise, pet therapy, blackboard
activities and small group workshops called “Motivate The Minds”. Their clients are provided with assistance with everyday functions such as ambulatory needs and they also offer twice a month support group meetings for their caregivers. The Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center proudly holds Open Houses every Tuesday and Thursday, where they offer refreshments while you can learn about everything they offer. Their center is located in the Knights of Colombus at 1 Morton Street in Farmingdale (on the corner of Morton St. and Garity Place). www.kinexion.org “Kinexion, (pronounced “connection”), is a brand new management service organization (MSO) on Long Island that oversees seven separate non-profits and provides them with infrastructure that frees them up to focus on what they do best, which is to offer best-in-class services to individuals with disabilities and progress society to a point where it embraces people of all abilities.
One of those non-profits is Independent Group Home (IGHL), which opened its first group home in Mt. Sinai in 1978 to provide a community-based, homelike environment that encouraged personal growth and a genuine sense of belonging to a community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since then, IGHL has developed multiple community home opportunities, and a complete services network throughout Suffolk County. IGHL also runs Day Treatment programs, residential homes and communitybased residential homes to allow people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience living in a home environment while receiving the specialized care they require. “The goal of IGHL’s residential program is to encourage growth and independence while providing a genuine sense of belonging,” said Stockton, who is also President & CEO of IGHL. “We help each of our residents and program participants be as independent as possible. We teach

Started by a coalition of parents, community and staff in 1976, the school provides education and therapeutic services. “At NIS, we believe in the rights of every child to grow and learn in a supportive environment, and the rights of parents to have a real voice in their children’s education,” said Jay Silverstein, Executive Director of NIS. “We are always willing to try new approaches that are compatible with our child-centered philosophy. We strongly believe each child, regardless of disability, ethnic background or socioeconomic status has the right to develop to his/ her fullest potential.” This organization offers classes ranging from small self-contained groups to larger inclusion classes. Babylon IDA’s Economic Inclusion Initiative Is Proof Of Progress Program Supporting MWBEs With Training And Resources Sets Example For The State which are hurdles to success, was our main objective and with the results we have seen from this program’s infancy tell us we are onto something revolutionary. It is our hope that with some additional funding, we can expand this program locally while regions throughout the state can launch similar programs so we can really make some progress on this front statewide.” Since its launch in the fall of 2020, the initiative has guided the development of nearly 30 aspiring or existing business owners who were looking for direction amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. From a financial perspective, the program has helped business owners secure nointerest loans while also improving access to capital by creating supporting crowdfunding and micro-lending. In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow. The program, which is aimed at supporting and elevating Minority, Women and Veteran Business Enterprise entrepreneurs within the Town of Babylon, has helped dozens of dedicated entrepreneurs connect to financial, technical and legal assistance, with many starting new businesses or getting MWBE certified in the process. “The purpose of this effort was to focus on entrepreneurs within the Town that were primed for success but didn’t have all the tools or resources to do so,” said Tom Dolan, CEO of the Babylon IDA. “Helping to fill these common gaps,

Inflation rates are higher now than they have been in decades, and costs are impacting consumers and companies around the United States. Small businesses are struggling to keep pricing down and stay open. Many business owners are grappling with how to deliver customers the best quality products at the lowest price possible. We talked with local company Unified Home Remodeling, on how they are combating inflation to keep prices down during this time. Unified is leveraging its long-standing partnerships with national manufacturers to control costs and reduce unnecessary price hikes for consumers. The company is passing on many exclusive deals and rebates they receive from large quantity purchases to customers to retain some of the most competitive pricing in the market. “For nearly 35 years, Unified has forged relationships with national manufacturers and suppliers to help control costs during some of the most challenging financial times in recent history,” said Steve DiMare, Founder of Unified. “We have increased our internal efficiencies by developing seamless ordering, delivery, and invoicing procedures over the years – and we are proud to put those cost-savings right back into our customers’ pockets.” While Unified is able to do this with their long history and dedicated staff many other companies are not able to do this and are forced to increase their pricing. Some prices for products like windows, doors, siding, roofing, and masonry have increased over 150% since 2020. With price jumps continuing to be given to companies every month, and sometimes every week, only the most dedicated companies will be able to keep costs down for their customers.

Babylon IDA’s Economic Inclusion Initiative Is Proof Of Progress Program Supporting MWBEs With Training And Resources Sets Example For The State
A cornerstone of the effort was the Storefront Development Pilot Program, seeking to improve occupancy rates in underutilized business districts while also providing small business owners with affordable space needed to advance their businesses. Two local entrepreneurs have already taken advantage of this program and both have seen an increase in revenue, sales and hiring. There are two more businesses going through the process to take advantage of the successful pilot program. “The Economic Inclusion Initiative is a crucial
initiative to bridge the gap between an entrepreneur’s vision, implementation and sustained success,” said NAACP LI Regional Director Tracey Edwards. “The program aims to remove all obstacles, close the revenue gap, and create more paths of entrepreneurship through innovation and partnership. What the Babylon IDA has launched is an effective model of a community-driven strategy that should be used across New York State.” Contributing greatly to this development has been an ongoing series of educational events and training resources for business owners. This fall,
the initiative will host a bootcamp series focusing on business development and social media marketing. There are also numerous B2B Minority, Women and Veteran networking event series being planned to help entrepreneurs make the business connections that can support and elevate their businesses. Joseph Slack, a longtime resident of Amityville, died June 11, 2022 at our Lady of Consolation NH in West Islip, LI. He was 88 years old. Mr. Slack was born on August 24, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph N. and Evelyn (Beacom) Slack. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served from 1956 to 1957. He was a former Village Trustee in the Village of Amityville and a Bay Constable of the Town of Babylon. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie in 2014, also his sons Wayne and Brett. Survivors include his children; Glenn (Edell), Luke (Joanne), Pamela Damboise (Kelly), Joseph (Jennifer) and Jodi De Domenico (Joe); eleven (11) grandchildren; was predeceased by two (2) grandsons Glenn & Daniel Slack; also survived by his daughter in law Debbie Slack. He also leaves behind his Chesapeake Bay Retriever Josie. Father Randolph Jon Geminder, Rector of St. Mary’s Eppiscopal Church conducted the funeral service at the funeral home. Other services

What Does An Economic Slowdown Mean For The Housing Market? According to a recent survey, more and more Americans are concerned about a possible recession. Those concerns were validated when the Federal Reserve met and confirmed they were strongly committed to bringing down inflation. And, in order to do so, they’d use their tools and influence to slow down the economy. All of this brings up many fears and questions around how it might affect our lives, our jobs, and business overall. And one concern many Americans have is: how will this affect the housing market? We know how economic slowdowns have impacted home prices in the past, but how could this next slowdown affect real estate and the cost of financing a home? According to Mortgage Specialists: “Throughout history, during a recessionary period, interest rates go up at the beginning of the recession. But in order to come out of a recession, interest rates are lowered to stimulate the economy moving forward.” Here’s the data to back that up. If you look back at each recession going all the way to the early 1980s, here’s what happened to mortgage rates during those times (see chart): As the chart shows, historically, each time the economy slowed down, mortgage rates decreased.
