house an expanded Cancer Center with its outpatient services. “The upbeat energy here at Stony Brook and the vision of the Cancer Center leadership is really quite amazing,” said keynote speaker Doug Ulman, a three-time cancer survivor, President and CEO of Pelotonia, and former Livestrong President and CEO. “Talking to many of you inspires me, and seeing the commitment that Stony Brook has in its mission to cure cancer should inspire all of you and future patients treated here.” Ulman is a national cancer survivorship advocate. After overcoming chondrosarcoma during his sophomore years in college and malignant melanoma twice since, in 1997 he founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This non-profit organization provides support, education, and resources to young adults, their families and friends who are affected by cancer. Stony Brook patients such as Maritza McGee, 45, an acute myeloid leukemia patient who received a bone marrow transplant, and Carmen Cali, 62, a patient treated for multiple myeloma for 10 years who has undergone two bone marrow transplants, stood out as rays of hope for the many Stony Brook patients still undergoing treatment. McGee, Cali and the hundreds of other survivors enjoyed the day, the comradery and unity they all shared, and the outdoor festivities for all – survivors, family, friends, and the Stony Brook Cancer Center physicians, nurses and staff.

More than 800 people, including some 300 cancer survivors, came together to celebrate survivorship and life with their families and Stony Brook University Cancer Center caregivers at Stony Brook’s annual National Cancer Survivors Day. The beautiful, bright June day brought many sunny smiles to those in attendance, as well as stories of hope from survivors ranging from the very young to those in their golden years. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. National Cancer Survivors Day is a global day of celebration that takes place each June. Despite progress made treating many forms of cancer, collectively the disease remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S. “Cancer care at Stony Brook is advancing rapidly,

Honored By Community Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon to rename the corner of St. Ann’s and Kensington in Copiague in honor of longtime resident, actor and veteran Jerry Schatz, who starred in “The Little Rascals” as a child. At the street renaming, local community members and officials joined with
Schatz’s friends, neighbors and family members to speak of Schatz’s positive influence on the community. Town officials thanked Schatz, now 90 years old, for his service and congratulated him on receiving this honor. Schatz, a former childhood movie star, has over one hundred movie credits to his name from 1931 to 1938 and worked alongside Shirley Temple, Bing Crosby and Buster
Keaton. Schatz later gave up the Hollywood life in order to enlist into World War II, where he kept his acting past a secret. Schatz was awarded a Purple Heart after being hit with shrapnel from a kamikaze attack on the USS Sigsbee. After serving in both World War II and the Korean War, Schatz moved to Copiague with his wife Myra. where he still lives today.

More than 360,000 homes in Suffolk County are not sewered; the unmaintained and outdated septic systems and cesspools on these properties are contributing to nearly 70% of nitrogen pollution in the region’s waterways, including the Great South Bay. The excess nitrogen has caused harmful algal blooms, beach closures, destroyed the oncerenowned shell fishing industry and threatened the region’s ground, surface and drinking water supply. Suffolk County was particularly recognized for the launch of its Single Family Homeowner Septic Demonstration Pilot Program in 2014 where the county selected 19 homeowners through a lottery system to receive advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems with nitrogen removal capabilities at no cost to the homeowner. The systems include free installation, monitoring and maintenance for five years. The County will use these piloted systems to effectively test and provisionally approve systems to be used in additional homes throughout Suffolk County. Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

O’Connell Copiague High School junior, was selected to be one of 60 young women to participate in Running Start’s ninth annual Young Women’s Political Leadership Program held in Washington D.C. from July 6th through 12th. In February, McBeanAdams was encouraged by high school science chairperson Renee Locker to apply for the opportunity.
With her leadership in the community and ambition to succeed, McBean-Adams was a great candidate for the program. The Young Women’s Political Leadership Program focuses on the important issues facing young women today and gives participants the tools to run for office. Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Madrigal Choir earned Gold for their performance at the New York State School Music Association Majors Choral Festival and Best Overall High School Chorus in the Music in the Parks Competition. Under the direction of music teacher Gina Occhiogrosso, more than 55 high school students performed “Wassail Song,” by Ralph Vaughn Williams, “Afternoon On a Hill” composed by Colin Britt and “Verduron,” traditional song of the Channel
Islands arranged by Randy Haldeman. A panel of judges evaluated the students’ performance on specific criteria including tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy/ execution, diction, rhythm precision, interpretation and discipline. To prepare for these performances, the Madrigals participated in a choral festival at the PAC Center at Walt Whitman High School in March. At the festival, students worked with Colin Britt, composer of “Afternoon On a Hill.” “The students loved
