Simmer Down, Society By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisﬁed? We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal

comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

From students to secret agents, Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District hosted a “Mystery Night” for students in grades three through five and their families. During the Mystery Night, students assumed the role of secret agents, receiving a secret agent ID card, a complimentary mystery genre book, a top-

secret notepad and pencil. Using their investigative skills and available clues, students and their families rotated to three different mystery-themed stations to solve each mystery. At the “Guess the Teacher” station, students viewed teachers’ baby photos and used clues to reveal who the were mystery teachers in each photo, students identified

mystery objects in a bag at the “Mystery Bag” station and at the “Mystery Cube” station students enjoyed writing their own mystery stories. To add an element of suspense, mystery speakers made announcements throughout the night. “It was a fun night for all!” said literacy coach Sheri Droz.

Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez was recently joined by Councilmen Tom Donnelly and Lindsay Henry, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma and Town Clerk Carol Quirk to honor local hockey star Jack Mroczka. Jack has played for multiple Long Island hockey teams, the Rebels,

Royals and Stars, and has been coached by former New York Islander Benoit Hogue. As captain of the Long Island Stars, he helped lead them through a tough schedule in the top AAA division. For the past three years, he has also been bestowed the great honor of playing for the CCM All-Stars in

Canada, an internationally competitive youth hockey team. For the upcoming spring, Mroczka will be taking another step towards future success by playing for the Boston Generals, a team that has NHL and USHL scouts.

Second-grade students at Northwest School in Amityville received a hands-on lesson in biology this spring when they watched a fertilized chicken egg develop into a full-grown baby chick. In teacher Franca Adams’ class, the students OUTWARD BOUND - The Kiwanis Club of Copiague presented Ali Urban the learned about the 21-week Outward Bound Scholarship, a phenomenal leadership program. an educational website. Each week the students learned which stage of development the baby chick was experiencing, all while watching that development unfold with the use of a special light that shined through the eggs while they stayed warm in the incubator. On June 2nd, one of the

dozen or so developing chicks in Ms. Adams’ class hatched, using its “egg tooth,” a knob of bone set on top of all baby chicks’ little beaks. The students got to learn about biology and cuddle up to a friendly pet at the same time.

KIWANIS INSTALLATION - Dr. Kathleen Bannon, who will be the new Copiague School Superintendent, was installed in the Kiwanis Club of Copiague by President Everett Newman and Kiwanian and School Superintendent Charles Leunig. Tatiana Leftenant, a seventh-grade student at Copiague Middle School, was the recipient of the “Teenpreneur of the Year” award at the 2015 Black Enterprise Entrepreneur Summit at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Leftenant started her own business, Sheascents LLC, as a result of her own experiences living with eczema, a skin disorder. Leftenant used shea butter to relieve the burning and irritating sensations from the ailment and decided to launch her own line of shea butter cream to treat the disorder. Soon after

Leftenant and her family turned her cream into a business, she entered the national competition against other young entrepreneurs for the Black Enterprise “Teenpreneur of the Year” award. To be eligible for this award, students under the age of 19 were required to have a viable business that embodies the challenging standards of sustaining a small business. As Leftenant made her way to Georgia for the Black Enterprise Summit, she was one of three finalists, competing against two college-level contestants. In result of her inspiring ambitions to turn

a negative situation into an entrepreneurial enterprise, Leftenant received the “Teenpreneur of the Year” award by Reggie Humphries of General Motors’ Supplier Diversity and Earl “Butch” Graves, the CEO of Black Enterprise magazine. In addition to this exceptional recognition, Leftenant recently launched her first commercial ad for Circle of Sisters 2015 where she will be a featured venue. Leftenant will also have her products featured on the Urban Home Shopping Network, aired on the UBCTV network.

The third-graders began by filling out the questionnaire, writing a friendly letter and then researching two states to narrow down their search. Once the states were chosen, the students then researched a town within that state and an elementary school within that town to address their letter. The letter also contained a questionnaire and instructions, so that the selected elementary schools can continue the race. The exercise encouraged students to develop skills

Amity Val Honored Keynote speaker Roger Tilles, a member of the New York State Board of Regents, encouraged the valedictorians to always put things in perspective, develop a backbone, become proactive and involved, use imagination and

creativity to propel forward, and find a job that matters. “Love what you do and feel that it matters,” Tilles said. “There is no greater fun than that.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to

receive a certificate and gift of recognition. During their acknowledgment, the universities they plan on attending were announced, along with their intended majors. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Duke University, Fordham University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Villanova University and Yale University. Also on hand to receive an award was Amityville High School senior Alexis Bosse, who received a scholarship from CORE BTS, Inc., one of the SCSSA’s corporate partners. Ten scholarships in total were awarded to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. This was the only event in which the Class of 2015 valedictorians were honored together, and it was a truly memorable occasion for all in attendance.
