Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers and the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law.

Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of

Father’s Day History her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion. Clayton brought the idea

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island. Little Flower’s mission is to improve the well-being of those they serve, which they do through rigorous medical and mental health programs and services. They believe that the devastating effects of trauma, poverty, racism, substance abuse, violence and lack of opportunity – particularly on children and families – can be healed with the proven use of effective therapy and support services. They provide care through a “What’s happened to you?” lens as opposed to “What is wrong with you?” lens. Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the speciﬁc needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal. At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home. The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic ﬁelds and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts

program or music and art therapy. Additionally, the youth also attend the Little Flower Union Free School District, a special act public school for students with special educational needs, which is also on their Wading River campus. Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed. Children receive dental services and are referred to specialists when recommended. In addition to the RTC, Little Flower also offers Community Family Treatment & Support Services (CFTSS) and Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Their organization’s service providers address various needs, such as daily living skills, coping skills, crisis prevention, socialization and employment needs, via telehealth, in the home, school and community. Recently enacted state laws require insurance agents to explain to new customers, how much SUM they may purchase. If your SUM does not equal your Bodily Injury coverage, talk to a licensed agent.

Bonjour And Hola Amityville Memorial High School World Language Honor Society Amityville Memorial High School recently welcomed 37 new members to its World Language Honor Society. 27 New members were inducted for their mastery of Spanish; 10 students were inducted for their excellence in French. In remarks to the students being inducted, Dr. Edward Fale, Superintendent of Schools of the Amityville School District, noted, “Your achievement in the study of a world language is exemplary. Each of you, in the language of your choice, has demonstrated a mastery of that language that is laudatory.” Dr. Fale also commended the district’s outstanding world language educators for their invaluable role

in helping the inductees achieve such heights in their world language studies. In order to be inducted, students have to meet certain standards and be nominated by their respective language teachers. Nominations are given based on a student’s past and current grades in their language of choice. World Language Honor Society students have to have a 90% or better cumulative average in their language classes. They must also have an overall cumulative GPA of 85%. Students being inducted into the World Language Honor Society must also demonstrate exemplary conduct and commit time to community service related
