makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Darrel Young reflects fondly on his career as a professional football player, but his time as a student in Amityville Union Free School District also invokes many fond memories. Young connected with fourth graders virtually at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School on May 17, and they listened with excitement as he talked about his childhood and his career. Young graduated in 2005 from Amityville Memorial High School, where he played football for the Warriors. He then attended Villanova University, followed by a six-year playing career in the NFL with Washington. In addition to sharing his experiences a player, he was able to talk with students about his new job as director of player development for the

Pittsburgh Steelers. During the videoconference, Young shared some words of wisdom. He spoke to students about setting goals and aspirations, as well as how to be motivated to reach their desired life outcomes. He also discussed how the education he received in Amityville and how it set him up for success in adulthood. Young noted the importance of living a selfless life. He said he begins every day asking himself, “Who can I help today?” and “How can I help them?” and ends every day by asking, “Who did I help today?” and “How did I help them?” Fourth grade teacher Leighann Ruggiero said that as a former Amityville student, he related very well to current Park

Avenue students, who were engaged throughout the discussion. She noted that Young’s message about personal responsibility and being accountable for

one’s own actions was very powerful for students. “He was great, and the students had a lot of great questions,” Ms. Ruggiero said. “He reminded them

that they can do anything they put their minds to. It was a positive message that will help motivate and encourage them.”

STUDENT POSTERS PROMOTE READING AT NORTHWEST - Nancy Yanes was the first grade winner in the Pick a Reading Partner book cover poster contest at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. For PARP month in April, each student was encouraged to make a poster recreating the cover of his or her favorite book as a way to foster a love of reading throughout the school. There were more than 300 entries. One finalist was selected from each class, and then grade level winners were chosen. Caleb Magnani was the kindergarten winner and Anyely Romero earned the top prize among second graders. Only in second grade, students in Maria Cottone’s class at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District can already call themselves published authors. The class created a book, with each child

receiving a copy, as a culminating activity in the personal narrative writing unit. Each student wrote a small moment story, about a special memory in his or her life. Ms. Cottone said that children could

write their stories in either English or Spanish, and also included an illustration. The stories were compiled together in a bound, hardcover book as a memento for every student.

Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the

Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -- but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit? “Your hands are the main transmitters of health careacquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered

nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -- opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can go a long way toward

ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of

germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the

opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.” Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread

of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.
