Three teams of Copiague Middle School students have been named national finalists in the second annual Bright Schools Competition. The competition is a collaborative effort of the National Sleep Foundation and the National Science Teachers Association that encourages students in grades 6-8 to explore the correlation between light and sleep and how it inﬂuences a student’s health and performance. The winning students from Copiague Middle School are Qbar Velasquez, Roman Burrus and Adam Antonsiak, who investigated “How Do Different Color Lights Affect Sleep?”; Tyler Rosario, Semaya Robinson and Asiatul Hoque, who studied the “Impact of Blue Light on Sleep;” and Elizabeth Garrovillas,

Olivia Healy and Lauren David, who submitted research on “How Does Asthma Affect Sleep?” Under the mentorship of Copiague Middle School science chair Dr. Daniel Leccese, the team identified, investigated, and researched an issue related to light and sleep as it pertains to their community and/or young adolescents. Teams develop a prototype, create an awareness campaign or write a research proposal for the competition. Each team then submits a written report detailing their project along with a three-minute video showcasing their investigation. Projects are evaluated on the basis of several criteria, including scientific accuracy, innovativeness and potential impact. The three Copiague

Sparking Change The student council members at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District are doing their share this Earth Day by launching a project to bring clean drinking water to villages in the Western Province of South Africa. The student council presented their Carbon for Water initiative to their classmates in grades

3-5 during an assembly on April 17th. Under the supervision of student council supervisor Christine Orlando, the group will be recycling plastic bottles in the cafeteria for the remainder of the school year. They will use the money they raise to purchase a large carbon filter from LifeStraw for a school in Africa. The students spoke

about the need for cleaning drinking water in Africa and how helping these villages will allow students to go to school instead of working to gather wood and water everyday. “Our goal is to help every child in the world receive an education, no matter where they are from,” the students told the audience. After reading Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax,” students in Kelli Geilman’s third-grade class made their own foldable lapbooks analyzing the environmentally themed book’s lessons. They also signed pledges promising to take care of the Earth, wrote actions that they could do and penned essays on the theme “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.” “At such a young age, the students can take part in this effort,” Ms. Geilman said. “I wanted them to learn that Earth Day is not just one day,

To celebrate Earth Day, students at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District participated in literacy, science and art activities to learn how to make the planet a better place. First-graders in Kristina Komsic’s class used tracings of their hands and blue and green paper circles to create “I’ve Got the Whole World in My Hands” posters. I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does ﬂy. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

The group, consisting of Kaya Branscum, Alexander Diaz, Shawn Fields, Myla Griffin, Brianna McQueen, Amber Palmer and Lenesha Swan, established a tank with a fish, java moss and beneficial bacteria, and discussed and maintained the nitrogen cycle within the tank.
