Ultra-runner Boyd Carrington posted an impressive performance at the 2018 U.S.A. Track & Field (USATF) 50K Road Championships held on Sunday, March 4 in Caumsett State Park. The Amityville athlete finished the 50-kilometer or 31-mile course in three hours, 24 minutes and 29 seconds, good for fourth overall in the national championship. Carrington competed with runners of all ages from across the country. However, New York athletes had a strong showing at the event, as the championships were once again hosted in Lloyd Harbor’s Caumsett State Park. Carrington finished top Long Islander within the field, and also placed in the masters division, for runners 40 years of age and older. Carrington, 45, was the second male master, finishing seven minutes behind third place runner Aaron Heath, 43, of Chappaqua, NY. The USATF 50K Road Championships was held in Caumsett State Park, co-hosted by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and features a 5K-loop course, making it an incredible race for spectators. Gabrielle Russo of Patchogue highlighted the score of Long Island performances, winning the female championship in a time of three hours, 36 minutes and 22 seconds. This year’s race saw overcast skies and a starting temperature of 39 degrees. The wind chill made the temperature feel closer to freezing, as a strong breeze was leftover from Winter Storm Riley.

The classrooms and hallways at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District will soon be full of color, thanks to the students who completed several projects under the direction of professional artist John DiNaro. Mr. DiNaro, who previously spearheaded mural projects at Amityville Memorial High School, visited Lydia Robinson’s art classes during the week of March 5-9. Children worked together to create a half-dozen murals
including one for the music room and several for the hallways. They used paint and glued on bottle caps to make the colorful creations. Students created the sketches that were the inspiration for the mural designs. Ms. Robinson and Mr. DiNaro were both impressed with the creativity of the students, who came up with a wide variety of ideas. Under Mr. DiNaro’s supervision, the students also painted two buddy benches, which will be placed in the school library. All

first- through third-graders contributed their artistic talents to either the benches or the murals. “Every student had a part in this,” Ms. Robinson said. “We worked together as a school community to create a beautiful space for ourselves.” Ms. Robinson added that the projects allowed students to further develop their artistic abilities but on a much larger scale. Students learned the importance of cooperation and collaboration.

The March of Time “Most of us take for granted that time flies, meaning that it passes too quickly. But in the mindful state, time doesn’t really pass at all. There is only a single instant of time that keeps renewing itself over and over with infinite variety.” ~ Deepak Chopra Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make
along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.
The wish, always, is to find this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

Paying Tribute a 17-second moment of silence and shared a video, which included the father of Parkland victim Alex Schachter reading a poem his son wrote a few weeks before his death. Additionally, 17 Amityville students took a vow of silence for the day to honor the victims. The assembly was part of nationwide movement by students to show solidarity for improved school safety. Principal Maria Andreotti
spoke about security procedures that are in place in Amityville schools. She also encouraged students to be the “eyes and ears” of their community by reporting any concerns, including social media posts. “The students, staff and administration of Amityville Memorial High School all want to create a safe and secure environment where the focus is on learning,” Ms.

Dr. Carole Polney, the assistant superintendent for technology and administrative services, outlined the district’s plans for the first phase of the Smart Schools Investment Plan. Amityville will receive approximately $2.2 million from New York State from the voter approved $2 billion bond. The district is looking to implement a 1:1 Chromebook initiative, which would give each child his or her own device. Dr. Polney said that the Smart Schools money would be used to purchase nearly 2,500 Chromebooks, as well as carts for storage and charging. Wireless accessibility in each school would be expanded to meet the demand, and teachers would receive additional professional development on Google Classroom and technology integration.

Amityville Memorial High School wrestler Deonte Wilson is a New York State champion. With four match wins in the state finals, the senior captured the title in the 285-pound weight class. Deonte finished the season with a 31-2 record, then won his second consecutive Suffolk County championship on February 11th at Suffolk County Community College. That earned him a berth in the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association’s 2018 wrestling championships at the Times Union Center in Albany on February 23rd and 24th, which he entered as the top-seeded wrestler in his weight class. With a win in the finals over a wrestler from Commack, he became Amityville’s first state champion in 17 years. “Deonte is a model athlete,” said Evan Farkas, director of athletics, physical education and health. “He leads by example and is a role model to our younger athletes. He

State Wrestling Champ is disciplined, has a great work ethic and is overall an amazing student.” Deonte was led this season by head coach Greg McCoy and assistant coaches Mike Albano, Pat Fallot and Billy Maisel. From March 23rd25th, Deonte will compete at the National High School Coaches Association competition in Virginia Beach. He plans to continue wrestling in college and is in the process of selecting a school.
