Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,

I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.

The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

Great Neck Road Elementary School students demonstrated their commitment toward leading a heart-healthy lifestyle when they participated in the school’s Jump Rope for Heart program. With the help of physical education teachers William Bennett and

Rachel Cone, kindergarten through fifth-grade students learned about how their heart works, how to take care of themselves through physical activity and the importance of eating a balanced and nutritious diet. To culminate their unit on heart health, students participated in the school’s

weeklong Jump Rope for Heart program. During their physical education classes, student jumped rope and rotated to six different stations geared toward increasing their heart rates, all in an effort to raise awareness for heart health and money for the American Heart Association.

Read (D.E.A.R.) program, a national month-long celebration of reading designed to remind people of all ages to make reading an active priority. During the kick off event, students in kindergarten

In addition to their showing at the state level, both Kelly and McFadden were recognized at Suffolk County All-County Dinner on March 4th. McFadden earned the outstanding athlete award, while Kelly was named an All-County Academic athlete.

Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is

going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what

I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

Fleming, Director of the Society, “but this object is so important and so rare –

Cathie Dunn, who volunteered to run this fundraiser for the Society, has done many other similar events in the past for other local charitable causes. “We are indebted to her for volunteering her time

for this event,” stated John Barnes, chair of the Society’s fundraising committee. Those who attend the auction need not be present to win the item that day. Winners who cannot stay until the auction’s conclusion will be notified the following Monday to pick-up their winnings. Library Recognizes Black History The library at Edmund W. Miles Middle School was transformed into an interactive museum in February to honor Black History Month. From Selma and the civil rights movement to Jackie Robinson and Lena Horne, students created broad displays that illustrated key moments in African-American History and its contribution to American history at large. Throughout the final week of February, students at all grade levels visited the library museum during scheduled class time to view the displays and interact with other elements of the showcase. For example, after the students toured the various stations, they were asked to contribute to a paper Twitter and Instagram “feed,” where they’d share what they learned about Black History throughout the month. The interactive museum also featured brief video documentaries created by ESL and social studies students that highlighted a prominent black figure in history. The videos were viewable through

Aurasma, a software application similar to a QR code. To upload the video, the students held a tablet over the image of the prominent figure and the video would begin playing.
