Recently, Amityville Memorial High School student Tamia Bayne attended the Girls Flag Football Kickoff event at MetLife Stadium which was sponsored by the New York Jets. The event was designed to promote Girls Flag Football and recognize one studentathlete from each school from Long Island who has committed to playing on her high school’s team. For her participation in the kick-off event, Tamia received a Zack Wilson NY Jets signed helmet. “I am incredibly proud of Tamia and how she represented our school at the Girls Flag Football Kickoff event,” said Mr. Evan Farkas, Amityville School District Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Health. “I am looking forward to our team competing this spring!” Amityville Memorial High School will be one of the eight schools in Suffolk County and 16 Long Island schools in total to compete this spring in the inaugural season. Each team will play six to eight games that will end in a playoff tournament. “Girls Flag Football is a great opportunity to

The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.
The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.

investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.
As businesses, we were gratified when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.
Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.
In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table.

This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.
It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state.

In celebration of Random Acts of Kindness Week, Park Avenue Elementary students will be “sprinkling kindness everywhere.” Leading up to the event, each student wrote acts of kindness on a sprinkle that turned into a touching bulletin board display in the school. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is a small nonprofit that invests its resources into making kindness the norm. Their mission is to connect everyone through kindness and to teach kindness by inspiring and empowering. “Being kind is a social and emotional skill that we want to instill in our students to ensure that they will live a more positive life—in and outside the classroom,” said Dr. Shirley E. Martin, Principal of Park Avenue Elementary School. “By designing classroom activities that highlight kindness and demonstrating kindness as role models will encourage students to be kind themselves.” Throughout the week, the school will have themed days as well as classroom activities to help spread kindness.

bright color to help brighten up someone’s day, and Thursday, February 17 is Work Out Your Problem with Kindness day, where everyone will be wearing athletic attire to work it out! Spirit week will end on Friday, February 18 with Kindness Warriors Day, students will show their Amityville’s Warrior pride by wearing their spirit wear or gray and red.

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is once again calling all runners, walkers, cyclists and wheelchair athletes for its 2022 virtual 5K. Participants in the “Hugs for Sarah 2022 Virtual 5K” can run alone, with a friend or with a team, and all entrants will receive a custom race bib and medal. Registration is online only and will take place from March 21 to April 30 with a registration fee of $35. Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, recently was awarded a significant donation from the Manes American Peace Prize Foundation in honor of Life’s WORC 50th anniversary. Harvey R. Manes, M.D., Esq., President of the Manes American Peace Prize Foundation Board of Trustees noted, “The Manes Peace Prize Foundation is honored to donate to the 50th anniversary of Life’s WORC and Vicki Schneps for their tireless effort to improve the lives of those with special needs.” Organizations that qualify for a prestigious Manes American Peace Prize Foundation award is one which the Foundation has identified as having done the most in the preceding year to contribute to “good will” in the areas of health, education, art and welfare (i.e., fighting poverty and helping underserved people rise to their own potential). with intellectual and developmental disabilities and affording them the optimum quality of life.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. Music Courses
Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind
the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

11th Annual All Kids Fair Is Back At A New Exciting Venue The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a
wonderful event for families. We will be glad to return to have more fun!” Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booth, and cotton candy, all included with admission. Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces on all the happy kids.” This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. The Fair has choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. There will be information about places to play, camps, after-school activities, birthday party
providers, and college planning. A charity drive to benefit The Book Fairies, a 501c3 that provides books to those in need, will return this year. Those who donate gently used or new books or money will receive raffle tickets to win great donated prizes.
