Amityville Elementary Schools Celebrate Black History Month

This February, elementary schools in the Amityville School District went the extra mile to celebrate African American history and Black culture. At Northeast Elementary School, each class was assigned a famous African American historical figure for a Black History project. Throughout February, students at Northeast were taught a variety of different aspects of African
American history and heritage. For example, students learned both old and modern spiritual songs as well as the Black National Anthem. At the end of the month, posters and displays of their projects were set up, and there was a gallery walk for all students to deepen their understanding and reinforce the importance of Black history. awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.
Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-profit organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone. Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. School-Based Services: YES Community Counseling Center provides Social
Work services to elementary school aged students in various school districts. WISH Program: Women In Shared Healing (WISH) provides comprehensive services for community members who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused, as well as those effected by or witness to domestic violence. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Prevention Services: These services are provided to youth, families, parents and community groups and are designed to reduce individual, family and community level risk factors and increase protective factors. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Parenting Programs: Various programs are offered to assist parents/guardians in raising children. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. YES CCC provides a financial literacy program called Commerce Plaza to students throughout Long Island at their Levittown location. This unique program immerses students in a simulated business community with hands-on experience by assigning them roles and tasks that replicate actual work experience. Students learn about leadership, budgeting, operating a business, banking skills, and teamwork. Since opening in May 2000, Commerce Plaza has hosted over 69,000 students from school districts on Long Island. Available to students in both Suffolk County and Nassau County.

PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energy- saving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency programs. That’s a savings of more than 2.1 billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year. These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year: · Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs
with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. · Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. · Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling
needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. · Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more. · Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage
