Oh, the Places You’ll Go When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery.

In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

Embracing germs: They’re not all bad

erms have gotten a somewhat undeserved reputation. For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid. However, not all germs must be avoided. Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have beneﬁts that outweigh their negatives.

People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments. Unfortunately, the “antibacterial” products available for cleaning and medicines used for treating bacterial illnesses do not discriminate between good and bad germs. They simply eradicate them all. Heathline says that this can create an imbalance of bacteria in the body that may lead to harmful bacteria taking over. Harmful bacteria also may evolve to resist common treatments because of the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial medicines and products. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antimicrobial agents have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

Although they’ve helped treat illnesses, these drugs have enabled the organisms they’re meant to destroy to adapt to them, making the drugs less effective. Some bacteria are even resistant to certain antibacterial drugs. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections. Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure. People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difﬁcult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

Discomfort due to PAD usually occurs when a person is walking or exercising, because the muscles are not getting enough blood during these activities to meet their needs, says the American Heart Association. Those with diabetes may confuse pain with neuropathy, and the elderly may think pain from PAD is a normal sign of aging and stiffness.

When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet.

According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary ﬁber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of ﬁsh and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

Cataracts are the most common eye problem affecting vision. It is estimated that there are about 2 million cataract surgeries in the US each year. The treatment of cataracts has evolved over the years and now we can offer excellent visual outcomes to our patients with minimal risk and low incidence of complications. Inside the eye, there is a lens, which is supposed to be clear, like a camera lens. If this lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. So, a cataract is just a cloudy lens. If there is minimal cloudiness, the vision will not be affected, and that eye may still see well. Sometimes a new eyeglass prescription may help someone see better if there is a mild cataract. Some conditions that will cause a cataract to progress are: age, certain medications, injuries, poorly controlled diabetes, and some inherited conditions. If a cataract’s cloudiness increases to a point where new glasses cannot improve the vision, then surgery is recommended. Some of the symptoms patients may have from a cataract are: difficulty driving and seeing signs, difficulty reading fine print, excessive glare and halos around lights when

driving at night, intolerable glare when in sun, difficulty reading the captions on TV, and inability to see the computer screen clearly. When surgery is recommended, there are many options our patients have so we can customize their visual outcomes. When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens implant is placed in the eye to restore the vision. Different types of implants are available, and we can correct a patient’s vision so they can read without glasses, see distance without glasses, or in some cases use special multifocal lenses so patients can see both distance and close-up without depending on glasses. When a patient becomes a candidate for surgery, many tests and measurements are done, (painless), and then reviewed by the surgeon and patient together to determine the appropriate type of lens for that patient. There are also lens implants that will correct astigmatism, an optical defect of the eye that is usually present throughout life, and treated with glasses or

contact lenses. Now, we can implant a special lens that will correct astigmatism, also to reduce the patient’s dependence on glasses, and to increase the quality of vision after surgery. Over the past 5 years, we have introduced in Suffolk County, the use of a special laser, (a femtosecond laser), to assist with surgery. This laser performs the most difficult and important part of the surgical procedure in about 1 second, reducing the risk of surgery and improving the outcomes of the procedure. The laser can also treat astigmatism, which allows our patients to see very clearly post surgery. Our experience with laser cataract surgery has been extremely positive, with our patients achieving exceptional visual results with very little risk of complications. The actual surgical procedure is performed in a cataract surgical center, as an outpatient. The painless surgery takes about 15 minutes, the patient has light IV sedation for comfort, then has a snack and is discharged to home. There is no patch or stitches and

most patients are able to drive the next day, and return to work in 2-3 days. Only one eye is operated on at a time, and usually, if there is a cataract in the other eye, its surgery is performed within 1-2 weeks. Our patients enjoy excellent vision after this low risk surgery. Of course, there is risk of complications and all precautions are always taken to ensure a successful outcome. Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s. Beck was doing psychoanalysis at the time and discovered there was a link between thoughts and feelings. Beck discovered people weren’t always aware of automatic thoughts that popped up in their minds, particularly those negative in nature. By identifying these thoughts, a client could overcome certain difﬁculties.

The National Association of CognitiveBehavioral Therapists deﬁnes CBT as a general term for a classiﬁcation of therapies with certain similarities. It does not exist as a distinct therapeutic technique. CBT is a short-term, goaloriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a practical form to problem-solving, advises Psych Central. The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started. CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves

Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year-old asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Nana gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “Thats what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!” Hearing this, my grandson burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentlemen approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my grandson asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the women whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae, and without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already.”

Loving Math Valentine’s Day sparked mathematical inquiry at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. First-graders rotated through different centers to improve their math

skills. In Kristina Lovett’s class, children used candy hearts to measure different objects and then sorted their hearts by color to create graphs. Margaret Brooks had her students focus on

addition and subtraction. In Delicious Doubles, children had to match cards with equations to cards with the correct answer.

BRINGING EXTRA LOVE - On Valentine’s Day, the Kiwanis Club of Amityville brought some extra love to the residents of the Massapequa Center. Members cheerfully handed each resident a long stem rose along with a handmade card. The cards were created by the students in the younger grades of the Amityville School District. Cheerleaders Honored Several projects from the $69.9 million capital construction bond passed by Amityville Union Free School District voters in March 2016 are nearing completion. The board of education was provided with an update at the February 14th meeting by representatives from the district’s architectural and construction management firms.

Security vestibules have been installed at each school. The vestibules include a second set of locked doors at the main entrances, which are monitored by security guards. Scaffolding has been removed from the front of the north and south wings at Park Avenue Elementary School as the masonry reconstruction

project wraps up. Door and hardware replacements are ongoing at the five schools, which includes a new lock system that can be automatically activated in the event of a lockdown. The district is still hoping to begin construction on the addition to Amityville Memorial High School this summer, despite delays with approvals at the State Education Department.

teacher Jennifer Schweigert recognized four students from the Amityville chapter of Distributive Education Clubs of America for their performance at the regional competition. Ana Candia, Eddie Marrero, John Quinone and Gemma Rojas will compete in DECA’s state tournament in Rochester from March 7th-9th. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Diane Castonguay gave her second presentation on the tentative 20182019 budget, focusing on the tax levy, revenue and reserves. Upcoming budget workshops are March 7th and 14th, and April 11th and 18th. The final meeting will be an overview of the proposed spending plan. The budget

vote is May 15th. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly reported on her two days spent shadowing students, an eighth-grader at the middle school and a high school junior. She said as part of that experience, she played hockey in physical education, took a French text and a history midterm, participated in science experiments and had a violin lesson. Dr. Kelly said the experience was part of the Strategic Plan of improving communication and it allowed her to receive meaningful feedback. It also made her extremely proud of the quality of education being offered in Amityville schools and she enjoyed seeing firsthand the hard work of the students, staff and teachers.

The board of education did approve a bid for window replacement at Edmund W. Miles Middle School, a project that will begin over the summer. The board and administrators honored the varsity cheerleading squad, which just completed its first season of competition.
