The Joy Animals Bring Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity. Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog. I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of. I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my
lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie. Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave? Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior. In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story. As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and
running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face. Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can. I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him. These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness. Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longestmarried couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.

Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends far beyond their cute appearances and loving temperaments.
Pets can help prevent loneliness Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit greatly from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely, compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. Pets can save lives Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters and have even been known to detect illness in some cases. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with their everyday tasks.
Pets help lower allergy risks Keeping pets around your home can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern, that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People who are exposed early on in life to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. Pets provide you with socialization opportunities A pet can be the common denominator you need to strike up new friendships and connect with others in your area. Whether you are walking around the neighborhood with your pet, taking part in a pet obedience class or interest group, or hanging out at the local dog park, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. Pets can help combat stress Talking to, playing with or simply stroking your pet can make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that having a pet around can lower
your blood pressure, ease anxiety, and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder.

he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.
However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present. This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Foundation and author of the “Zone Diet,” and Dr. Andrew Weil, who offers the AntiInflammatory Food Pyramid, have begun to tout certain foods that are purported to reduce inflammatory response over an extended period of time.
As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate. Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating and fatigue associated with inflammation. It is important to speak with a doctor before
making any significant dietary changes. Discuss any inflammation issues you have been having and which foods might help. Generally speaking, a diet full of diverse, antioxidant-rich foods can provide relief for those with various levels of inflammation.

The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts. Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. Dr. Leila Kheirandish-Gozal, director of clinical sleep research at the University of Chicago, says that, over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function. here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.

Explore Benefits of HIIT Fitness T In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.
HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories. A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.
HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.
During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop
her baby weight. People may see greater results by doing HIIT workouts three times a week for half of the duration than they would if they were performing more typical workouts more frequently. For those whose schedules are already jam-packed, HIIT can be a more efficient way of exercising. HIIT requires a strong baseline fitness lev-
el, so beginners or those who have been out of the gym for some time are urged to start slowly. Also, since HIIT causes high demand on the heart and respiratory systems, it is essential to discuss the regimen with a doctor to find out if HIIT is a smart choice depending on your personal medical history. eart disease is a formidable foe. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for nearly 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year.
Issues relating to the heart affect both men and women, and an estimated 15 million adults in the U.S. have coronary heart disease (although many don’t know), the most common type of heart disease. Heart disease is not exclusive to the United States, as the Heart Research Institute says that every seven minutes in Canada someone dies from heart disease or stroke. Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize their heart health. Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable, and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk. If you smoke, stop smoking right now. One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. It also contributes to atherosclerosis, or a narrowing and clogging of the arteries. Smoking is, essentially, a fast track to heart disease. Eat healthy fats. When eating, choose polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats and avoid trans fats as much as possible. Trans fats increase one’s risk of developing heart disease by clogging arteries and raising LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Instead, you want to up your HDL (good) cholesterol with food like: olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds and some fatty fish like salmon or sardines. Read food labels before buying anything at the store.
Keep your mouth clean. Studies show that bacteria in the mouth involved in the development of gum disease can travel to the bloodstream and cause an elevation in your C-reactive protein, a marker for blood vessel inflammation. Brush and floss twice daily, and be sure to schedule routine checkups with your dentist at least two times per year. Get adequate shut-eye. Ensuring adequate sleep can improve your heart health. One study found that young and middle-age adults who regularly slept seven hours per night had less calcium in their arteries (a sign of early heart disease), compared to those who slept five hours or less, or those who slept nine hours or more. Your heart craves a level of homeostasis to stay healthy. Adopt healthy eating habits. Changes to your diet, including eating more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, can help you lose and maintain a healthy body weight, improve your cholesterol levels and reduce blood your pressure — leading to a healthier heart. Embrace physical activity. Regular, moderate exercise is great for the heart. It can occur at the gym, playing with the kids outdoors, taking the dog on long walks or hikes, or even taking the stairs at work. Any way you slice it, your heart craves a minimum of 20-30 minutes of physical activity per day. A healthy heart begins with daily habits that promote long-term heart health, and the sooner you begin a heart healthy lifestyle, the greater your chances of staving off heart disease.

Progress on Capital Projects In their monthly report, representatives of Park East Construction and BBS Architects said that the foundation work for the new wing is complete. Steel will be delivered to the site in March so construction can begin on the addition that will include general classrooms, science labs, a gymnasium, locker rooms and expanded cafeteria. The work is expected to be
completed in August 2020, allowing the ninth grade to move into the building for the 2020-21 school year. Renovations to the existing high school building will take place during the summers of 2019 and 2020. One project steadily progressing is the replacement of the original windows at Edmund W. Miles Middle School.

The second in series of budget workshops featured a report by Sydney Freifelder, the assistant superintendent for finance and operations, on the tax cap, revenue and reserves. Upcoming workshops include March 6, 13 and April 3. The board is expected to adopt its budget on April 10, with a budget hearing on May 8 and budget vote and board of education trustee election on May 21.

Several sections have already been completed, and second- and third-floor windows in the front are scheduled to be replaced over February break. The district has received state approval for the expansion of Northwest Elementary School. The nearly 17,000-squarefoot addition will include nine new classrooms, a small gymnasium and small instruction rooms. Northwest will house kindergarten through second-grade upon completion of the capital projects. One of the first projects will be the installation of a new playground, because the new wing will be built on the south side

Amityville Exchange Program Amityville Memorial High School students are making friends all over Suffolk County. Through the school’s Cultural Exchange program, they welcomed peers from Bayport-Blue Point and East Islip high schools earlier in the year. In February, it was their turn to be visitors. On February 5th, students from Amityville’s Warrior Awareness Club spent the day in East Islip. Students were welcomed with a big breakfast and took part in icebreaker activities. Each Amityville student paired up with an East Islip student and followed the schedule of his or her host. This was the first visit by Amityville to the home of the Redmen and they loved it, according to the group’s adviser, Jason McGowan. Amityville hosted the East Islip students back in January for the inaugural visit. They also sent 30
students to Bayport-Blue Point High School on February 13th for their visit to the home of the Phantoms. Amityville students and staff were greeted by the orchestra as they walked into the cafeteria. B a y p o r t - B l u e Point School District administrators led icebreaker activities in a conference room and students, who initially met in Amityville in November, were reintroduced to each other over breakfast. In a true double exchange, Amityville senior Letizia Cazzaniga, an exchange student from Milan, Italy, was a part of the program and she connected with her partner, Emily. Sophomore Abel Tejada was paired up with Mr. McGowan’s son, Trey, and won a badminton tournament together in physical education class. “I loved spending the day in their high school,” junior Bryan Canales said.
“All of the students were friendly toward us.” After gathering together for a pizza lunch, the Amityville and BayportBlue Point students parted ways but not before exchanging phone numbers and social media information. “Teenagers are teenagers, and that’s the point I am trying to make with this program,” Mr. McGowan said. “Even though we are a few zip codes away, connections can be made regardless of your background. It was beautiful to see the laughter and the hugs as we left each school. The major goal of this program is for students to learn about diversity by experiencing dissimilar school populations. Rather than discussing diversity in a typical classroom lesson, participants have the opportunity to experience it first-hand.”

100 Days Smarter Kindergartners at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District reached a milestone on February 13th when they attended school for the 100th day. Upon hitting triple digits for the 201819 school year, students participated in a variety of 100-themed literacy and
math activities. Many children envisioned themselves about 95 years into the future by dressing up as 100-year-olds. They saw pictures of centenarians — people who have reached the age of 100 — and wrote about all they want to accomplish before turning 100.
Students colored 100day crowns which they then wore with pride, counted 100 of different objects and imagined how they would spend $100. They practiced their math skills by counting to 100 by fives and tens.
