Boy Scouts Troop 284. At the ceremony, Hernandez was named an Eagle Scout. Supervisor Schaffer thanked Hernandez for his commitment to improving his community and wished him luck in his future endeavors. For his Eagle Scout Project, Hernandez planned and constructed a

12-foot by 12-foot gazebo at Tanner Park in Copiague. The gazebo was dedicated to Joseph Ferriso, a fellow Eagle Scout from Troop 284 and former Hofstra University lacrosse player who died in 2015. The gazebo will provide park visitors with a comfortable place to enjoy the scenic view of the Great South Bay.

Cracking the Classics the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Late Leader Honored Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Terry McSweeney, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre recently attended the street renaming ceremony in honor of former Copiague resident Everett Newman. The officials were joined by many members of the community, including

his wife, Wendy, and his six children: Donna, Barbara, Theresa, Toni, Everett and James. Boy Scouts of America Troop 283 and Copiague School District Superintendent Kathleen Bannon were also in attendance. East Gate in Copiague was ceremoniously renamed “Everett E. Newman III Memorial Way.” Newman became a Copiague resident in the early-1970s. He spent 30

years on the Copiague Board of Education, as well as being a former President of the Copiague Lions Club and Kiwanis and leader of several Boy Scouts Troops. Newman passed away in August of 2017. Schaffer highlighted Newman’s commitment to the Copiague community at the ceremony, and used his work as a model for serving the town you live in.

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s freshman class, along with Conciencia Latina and the Spanish Club, hosted a Zumbathon fundraiser on January 26th. Kicking off the night

was a performance by the Madrigal Choir, led by Gina Occhiogrosso. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School foreign language teacher Gabrielle Romanelli led Zumba, along with

four other professional instructors taking turns leading the group. The event raised more than $735, with a portion of the proceeds donated to a local family that recently lost their home due to a fire.

REINFORCING SCIENCE - As part of their science unit, fifth-graders in Karen Coyle’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District each made their own terrariums. After learning about the earth’s major systems – atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere – the students conducted the DANCING FOR A CAUSE - Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School hosted a activity as part of the earth and space systems unit. The terrariums, which show how Zumbathon fundraiser on January 26th. Up Close Brian Wallrapp, aka the “Science Guy” spent the week of January 29th at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District teaching hands-on engaging science lessons. Wallrapp worked with each class during onehour science workshops.

Students experienced hands-on activities designed to bring classroom lessons to life. Some of the workshops included “Matterman,” “A Taste of Science,” “Electromagnets” and “Exoskeleton Creatures.” During the exoskeleton lesson, students were

up close and personal with Madagascar hissing cockroaches, millipedes and even a tarantula named Charlotte. As part of a ParentTeacher Associationsponsored program, parents and PTA members attended their own workshop with Wallrapp

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

COLORFUL EXPERIMENT - Fourth-graders in Jennifer Spizuco’s class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently completed a hands-on science experiment to coincide with their unit on plant and animal structures. Filling a cup with water and blue dye, the students placed a white carnation and a celery stalk and predicted if the flower and celery would change color all the way up or only in the parts that were in water.
