Youth Court Induction Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Town Councilman Tom Donnelly, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, and Town Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to induct the newest members of the Town of Babylon Youth Court. The Youth Court oath was administered by Supervisor Schaffer to the new inductees in attendance. The goal of the Youth Court is to reduce juvenile

delinquency through positive peer influence while allowing first time offenders of violations or misdemeanors under the age of 16 to be heard by a jury made up of those close in age to them. The Town of Babylon Youth Court Class of 2016 consists of 22 members between the ages of 14 and 18 who have completed a multi-week program. Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham. But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march. “At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our young people to dream big. Dream about the possibilities… decide what you want to do in life. And then, think about what it takes to reach that dream. What I took away from the [civil rights] movement was the importance of dreaming about the possibilities,” he said. “Children have an enormous capacity to think and act. That’s what we

For the 46th consecutive year, Northwell Health employees gathered to honor the teachings and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony, held at North Shore University Hospital’s Rust Auditorium, was simulcast to other Northwell facilities across the New York/ metro area. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and a child leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action. Dr. Hrabowski spoke to students who had been invited to the event saying: “Each of us ifthe product of our childhood experiences. Think of it…what you do right now could determine what you do in the future.” He then recounted his memories of hearing Dr.

As a way to honor the accomplishments of the Top 20 students in the graduating Class of 2016, while simultaneously giving recognition to the dedicated faculty who helped them on their journey to success, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School hosted a special luncheon for the students and their families on January 29th. Gathered in the school’s cafeteria, Principal Joseph Agosta welcomed the room of students, faculty, administrators, members of the Board of Education and family to the event. During his address, Agosta advised the students to get involved in what life has to offer, never be afraid to try something new and strive for excellence. “As you move on in life, remember the values, pride and sense of community that each member of

the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School staff has worked so hard to provide,” said Agosta. “I charge you with the task of continuing to put what you have learned to good use and to be a positive force in your community.” In chronological order, beginning at No. 20, Agosta introduced each student and read a short summary of their accomplishments and anticipated posthigh school endeavors. Following their introduction, the students proceeded to the podium, where they expressed their gratitude to the teacher whom they value most and credit for helping them through their academic journey in the Copiague School District. Care & Repair Sponsored by the Trauma Center at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, kindergarten students at Copiague’s Deauville Gardens East Elementary School participated in a Teddy Bear Clinic, a program that educates students on ways to prevent injuries and allows them to try their hand at tending to a “hurt” stuffed animal’s injuries. During the program, Stony Brook Medicine Trauma Center Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator Kristi Ladowski and a team of Stony Brook nursing students shared ways children can prevent and

reduce injury on the road, especially by wearing a seat belt in the car and helmet when riding a bicycle or scooter. Students also learned about the New York State law that requires children to be in a booster or car seat until their eighth birthday and the safest place for children to sit is in the back seat until they are 13 years-old. As a visual supplement to their discussion, students witnessed an egg demonstration that showed the implications of not wearing a helmet. Two students were given an egg to hold, one egg in a plastic bag and the other secured in a special

“egg helmet.” The students simultaneously dropped the eggs. While the egg in the plastic bag was broken to pieces, the egg in the helmet was safe and unharmed. With assistance from Stony Brook nursing students, kindergartners dressed in a hairnet, facemask and rubber glove, treated their “injured” stuff animals and dolls. The kindergartners completed a form that identified the toys’ name, injury and how many hugs the toy needed to feel better. Using bandages and medical wrap, students mended their toy’s injuries.

An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

RETIREE HONORED - After serving Suffolk County for 48 years in the Police Department Detective Lieutenant Thomas O’Heir has decided to retire effective February 2nd. In order to honor him for his service, Legislator Leslie Kennedy presented him with a proclamation with the County Seal fixed upon it to recognize his long-time service to the community. Detective Lieutenant O’Heirs’ long and accomplished career began in 1968 after graduating the Police Academy; Thomas O’Heir was initially assigned to the 1st Precinct. Through the years, he has been assigned to various precincts throughout the County and has advanced through the ranks. He now retires as a Detective Lieutenant from the 4th Precinct in Hauppauge.
