Pronto of Long Island, Inc. the outreach center whose main mission is to feed the hungry and clothe the needy, recently named Marc Soto of Merrick, N.Y. as the center’s new director. Soto has a law degree from the University of Nebraska and an extensive background in diversity and inclusion, training and development and general law practice. As director, Soto will be responsible for leading the agency in its work connecting members of the community with agencies, services and training. Pronto’s food pantry, which served up to 14,000 food insecure people monthly in 2020, continues to see an increase in those in need of food. “As Pronto’s director I hope to continue to meet many of the needs of our community and lead them on a path to peace, stability and independence,” Soto
said. “Food insecurity is a major threat to many families in the communities that we serve and across the country and so our top priorities will be to continue to address this issue and to reintroduce the detailed intake process to facilitate services, education and training and development.” “Marc brings a diverse skill set, expertise, and a contagious energy that are a perfect fit for Pronto’s mission.” said Robert S. Budd, CEO, Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. Obituary Joseph J. Danaher, longtime resident of Amityville & Copiague, LI., died January 13, 2021 at Good Shepherd Hospice, Rockville Centre, LI. He was 98 years old. Mr. Danaher was born in Brooklyn to Irish parents Patrick and Josephine Guiry Danaher on January 1, 1923. After graduation from Bishop Loughlin High School at the outbreak of World War II he joined the United States Coast Guard serving in the

The Reverend Gerard Gordon, Pastor, St. Martin of Tours RCC officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Student Ambassadors Attend Leadership Summit
Amityville Memorial High School seniors Bryanna Leguizamon and Genesis Perez joined aspiring leaders from across the region at the Junior Achievement New York Summit from Dec. 7-9. The virtual program featured numerous speakers, panel discussions, award presentations and student town hall sessions. Bryanna and Genesis were both selected as student ambassadors for the 2020-2021 school year. They have worked extensively with Junior Achievement’s High School Heroes program, teaching lessons about careers, community, family and finance to students in Amityville’s elementary schools. They also took part in the Finance Park program which included a financial literacy simulation with students from other Long Island high schools. As student ambassadors, Bryanna and Genesis were invited to the threeday Inspiring Tomorrows Virtual Summit. They attended panel discussions on multiple topics
including diversity, equity and inclusion in business, the impact of COVID-19 on New York’s economic prospects and the future of entrepreneurship in New York. Panelists included local elected officials and business leaders. During student town hall sessions, they connected with other students who participate in Junior Achievement programs to share their experiences and discuss trending topics. Before the summit began, Bryanna and Genesis had to submit short videos introducing themselves, their involvement with Junior Achievement and how it has impacted their lives. Although the summit couldn’t be held in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they both said they appreciated that the organization hosted an online event so they still had the opportunity to connect with other students and business professionals, and hear about important issues. “We represented our community and I was very proud about that,” Genesis said. “It was a nice
experience and it opened my eyes to a lot of new things.” Bryanna added that being a Junior Achievement student ambassador has her prepared to take on greater leadership roles and has given her the confidence to achieve anything she wants. Amityville Memorial High School business educator Dr. Diane Impagliazzo said that the virtual summit was a very valuable experience for the two students because they got to learn about a wide variety of topics and connect with a wide range of people. Although they won’t be able to visit elementary classrooms this year, Bryanna and Genesis are still planning to do the High School Heroes program virtually with third graders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. They have been training with Junior Achievement representative, Linda Furey. Bryanna and Genesis said that they believe in the value of the program, which is why they wanted it to continue.

Shy kittens need a little extra work to get them to come out of their shells, but they are always worth the effort once you earn their trust. Currently, there are a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster. If you are looking for a fun loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two! All of the felines at the Shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board certified Veterinarian. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

December, January and February are the least popular wedding months, but the experts at WeddingWire note that getting married during the slow season has its benefits. Vendors, including wedding planners and venues, may offer their services and facilities at discounted prices in
winter to account for the slow season. And guests might be thankful to have a fun event to look forward to during a time of year when social schedules tend to be less busy. Many wedding components will stay the same regardless of when couples walk down the aisle. However, couples may need to take a few things into consideration as they begin planning winter weddings. • Avoid holiday weekends. Just because social schedules are not always so busy in winter that doesn’t mean couples can pick any winter weekend to tie the knot. The holiday season, which begins on Thanksgiving weekend in late November and lasts until New Year’s Day, is a hectic time of year for many people. Avoid holiday weekends like Thanksgiving and the weekends before or after Christmas and New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day. These weekends already are busy travel times, so couples might
not be able to get guestfriendly rates on hotel rooms, and some guests may already have plans to visit family. In addition to the December holidays, avoid the first weekend in February. That’s Super Bowl weekend, and many people may be reluctant to travel on the day of the big game. • Research local weather. It’s impossible to predict the weather, but savvy couples can research local weather in the town or city where they’re getting married to determine when is the most travel-friendly month to host their weddings. Some regions get heavy snowfall in January, while others may be more susceptible to late winter snowstorms. Couples with a lot of out-of-town guests should choose a winter weekend where snowfall is unlikely so guests don’t have to endure travel delays on their way to and from the wedding. • Purchase wedding insurance. Wedding insurance is a wise investment for every couple, but it can be especially valuable for couples tying the knot in winter. Each policy is different, but wedding insurance policies should protect couples’ investments if storms force local officials to declare a state of emergency that prohibits travel. Make sure the policy covers both cancellations and postponements. Winter weddings can help couples save money. Planning such affairs may require paying attention to details that would not garner much consideration during other times of year.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities.
