Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District is taking a proactive approach in teaching students how to become good citizens. The school is using technology to support its character education program, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, commonly known as PBIS. Through the online resource ClassDojo, Park Avenue staff members can give points to students for their good behavior. Classroom and special subject teachers, as well as cafeteria and recess monitors, have access to the program, so children can earn points throughout the school day. Points are given based on which one of the six pillars of character a student followed - caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. Classroom libraries will be more plentiful at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District following the donation of two large boxes of books by nonprofit organization the Book Fairies. Each box contains thousands of used books of all different genres. Students have been helping select books that are in good condition and of interest to them to add to the existing libraries in English language arts classrooms. This supports the Reader’s Workshop initiative through Teacher’s College, Columbia University, which gives students more choice in the books they read for class. “It’s a resource that we can use,” seventhgrade ELA teacher John Katsigiorgis said of the new books. “We need to have a vast array of genres. You can never have too

Active About the Arts

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is proud to have joined with Project9Line in presenting “Active about the Arts,” an art and photography exhibition open to Active Duty Military and Veterans on Long Island. The exhibit ran from October 16th to October 26th at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street in Babylon Village. There was an Artists’ reception that was open to the public on Thursday, October 26th. BACCA was honored to showcase the artistic talents of the men and women who have served our Country. Also joining in this exhibition were photographers from the Vet Center in Babylon. Project9line focuses on bridging the communication gap between Veterans

and civilians. Through “Outreach, Communication and Purpose,” this positive approach enables all Veterans to express themselves uniquely through many forms of art. The arts have inspired these men and women to use their creativity and to allow the healing process their talent affords them, to enrich their lives. BACCA Board President Shawn Cullinane and Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon presented the artists with proclamations at the Artist reception. The success of the show would not have been possible without the support of National Endowment for the Arts, The Town of Babylon, and NYSCA. Marge Ryan, Project9line Executive Director, worked

with BACCA to create this special show. Carol Wirth, Executive Director, and Wendy Correa, photography teacher from the Vets Center in Babylon, exhibited the work of their photographers. Anthony D’Avino, an artist from North Babylon, was the curator for this show. On the evening of the reception, Ernie D’Alessio, who is the Music Director for Project9line, played guitar for all to enjoy. BACCA is well known for its support of the arts in the Town of Babylon. This event was a way of honoring the brave men and women who have served our Country, and it was thrilling to see the inspired works of our truly creative Veterans and Active Duty Military.

MESSAGES OF THANKS - Third-graders in Kaileen Spadaro’s class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District are remembering local heroes this Veterans Day. Celebrating Writing Writing is a reason for celebration at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Students in Jenny Smith and Kerrin Faulkner’s second-grade class shared their recently completed works at a publishing party. Children spent the last two months writing narrative stories and selected one to turn into a book. They were tasked with CELEBRATING WRITING - Northwest Elementary School second-graders showed creating pieces, four or five off the narrative stories that they created and then shared at a publishing party. Photo pages long, that elicited feeling and thinking from courtesy of: Amityville Union Free School District small moments in their lives. Following weeks of editing and illustrating,

new writing techniques they used in their stories. The assignment was part of Writer’s Workshop through Teacher’s College, Columbia University, an initiative that gives students greater choice in selecting topics to write about. Next, the students will write informational stories before moving on to opinion writing. “The students need to feel like accomplished authors to gain a sense of confidence about their writing,” Ms. Faulkner said. “They should know that their writing is important.”
