The elected officials stood side by side with LT Murphy’s parents; Daniel J. Murphy and Maureen T. Murphy, LT Murphy’s brother, John Murphy, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, Navy CDR (ret) Clark Brigger, LCDR Charles Nogueras, and members of the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Board. The proposed stateof-the-art facility will be constructed on the property of Charles P. Dominy Park in West Sayville. It will be the first Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast and the second SEAL museum in the United States.

LT Murphy was a graduate of Patchogue Medford High School (Class of ’94), and Pennsylvania State University (Class of ’98). After completion of his college degree, he worked diligently to become a Navy SEAL; after years of hard work and dedication he was bestowed the honor of United States Navy SEAL Lieutenant. LT Murphy lost his life on June 28th, 2005, while serving in Afghanistan. with Jamie Lynn Ryan Step by Step “In wisdom gathered over time, I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” ~ Ansel Adams I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

Dressed in their pajamas, students in grades 3-5 at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in a Family Literacy Night on November 1st. The theme, “Read With Me,” carried over from the K-2 Family Literacy Night held last month. Students joined teachers in their

classrooms to learn reading tactics such as “Read, Cover, Remember, Retell,” the “3-2-1 Strategy” and the “Two-Word Strategy.” Students partnered with a friend and took turns reading to one another. At the end of the evening, students received a “we both read” book to bring home, where students

and their parents can read together using higher-level texts for parents and ageappropriate texts for the students. While the students read together in the classrooms, parents learned about the different reading strategies and the importance of reading together at home.

Second-graders have been busy learning their numbers at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. They have been studying topics such

as even and odd numbers, place values and doubles. Lessons are reinforced through math centers, in which students work independently and in small groups. They sit with

their teachers to review concepts and play games on computers or using munipulatives such as dice and blocks.

Murphy Navy SEAL Museum will provide visitors with opportunities to interact with and learn about the SEAL Community, as well as preserve the history and honor of the Navy SEALS. This was the middle school’s third year participating, according to social studies Chairwoman Jaclyn O’Hagan. “Each year our students learn so much from the veterans and make personal connections with them,” she said, adding that the goal was to give students an appreciation for their service. Veterans discussed their reasons for joining the military, their experiences serving the U.S. and their lives after leaving the armed forces. Some showed photo slideshows, while others brought in memorabilia. Among the guests were Edward Plaia, father of the middle school principal, and Juan Leon, Amityville Board of Education vice president and Army veteran. Current servicemen discussed how the education they received growing up has benefitted them in their military service. They also taught students about the differences between Veterans Day, Independence Day and Memorial Day, and who each holiday was created to honor.

A Meal and a Mystery “Brenda and Eddie’s Wedding,” a hilarious murder mystery, delighted the 120 guests who attended the sold-out dinner theater production at Amityville Memorial High School on November 4th. The show took place in the cafeteria, so audience members were right in the middle of the action along with the 39 studentactors. Lead characters included Jacob Marrero as the groom, Amelia Tisk as

the bride, Alexander Diaz and Isabella Mohan as the bride’s parents, Alanna Graham as the mother of the groom, Nicolas Sohan as both Elvis and the victim Mr. Throckmorton, Justin Bethea as the best man Benny Goombots, Nathalie Larin as society columnist Mary Berger and Jonathan Blanchare as the DJ. At the end of the 1 ½ hour show, the audience learned the true identity of the killer, who was played by Colleen Compitello. The

play was directed by Melissa Asbell and Megan Ashe, with technical support from Eric Lee, Ginger Lee and Gerry Compitello. Guests were treated to a comfort food dinner of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, string beans, cornbread and salad, along with wedding cake for dessert. Proceeds from ticket sales will support the high school Drama Club, which will present “Seussical: The Musical” in the spring.

People from all walks of life visited Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on November 3rd to give students a glimpse of the future. More than three dozen professionals visited classrooms at the 10th annual Career Day. Many of the speakers were parents of Park Avenue students while others came from local businesses. The school partnered with the Amityville Chamber of Commerce and Amityville ParentTeacher Council to bring in presenters. The guests represented a variety of professions including law

enforcement, the military, business and finance, medicine, engineering, human resources and retail. The speakers discussed the responsibilities and challenges of their jobs, as well as the necessary qualifications to work in their respective fields. They also took questions from the curious students. Guidance counselor Kimberly Balducci, who organized the event, said that although the students are only in fourth through sixth grades, it is never too early for them to start thinking about their futures. By interacting with successful professionals,

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
