First Tech Challenge Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) was once again home to FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmages – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which brought science and creativity together on a robotics playing field. On Saturday, December 9th and Sunday, December 10th, twenty-nine teams from across Long Island competed in a friendly tournament-style scrimmage that prepared them for the upcoming season of FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a ﬂoor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech

Challenge teams across the world are asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponentcolored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots on “balancing stones.” FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries. Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. During all FIRST Tech Challenge tournaments, teams work in alliances with the goal of scoring more points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks,

during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods, on a 12-by-12-foot playing field. Last weekend’s scrimmages were the first events in the 2017-2018 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island. Long Island students will then use these robots to compete in Qualifier tournaments at Lynbrook High School (Sunday, January 7th, 2018); Center Moriches High School (January 13th-14th, 2018); and Sewanhaka High School (January 27th-28th, 2018). Students will compete at these events for a chance to ultimately advance to the Championship tournament at Smithtown High School West (February 11th, 2018). “FIRST Tech Challenge

As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reﬂect. Each year is full of its own moments, ﬂeeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected

beginning of a new one. Just as we must learn to accept unexpected circumstances, we must take an active role in changing our own.

direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Of course, all the theorizing in the world can only accomplish so much. A life on paper is not a life at all; the words must take shape in our actions and follow through in order to make any discernible difference. And, in that, we create our very own snowﬂake, a composite of our unique qualities and circumstances, our passions and personalities. No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.

The second rationale follows the logic that, simply because the calendar has ﬂipped its pages does not mean that any other substantial changes are destined to follow. New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. A traditional holiday second-grade classroom activity had an educational at Northwest Elementary twist in Dana Herz’s School in the Amityville

New Courses Added The Amityville Memorial High School jazz band started the December 13th board of education meeting on a positive note with the performance of two songs. Under the direction of band teacher Jolene Maccarone, the musicians performed “I Got You” and “Let It Snow.” Patrick Abate and Justin Bethea had solo parts. The board approved four new courses at the high school, which will be offered beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. Themes in U.S. history through film will be a half-year elective in social studies, and personal fitness will be a half-year physical education course offered to junior and seniors. Two full-year classes will be added in the math department including introduction to statistics and analysis and Advanced Placement statistics. High school Principal Maria Andreotti said that all of the new classes are highly rigorous and academically engaging. Representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction gave their report to the board on the status of projects from the March 2016 bond. They said that most of the work that began this summer

is nearing completion, including the installation of security vestibules at all five buildings and masonry repairs at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. The districtwide door and hardware replacement project is expected to begin after the holiday break and continue through February. Work that is expected to begin in summer 2018 includes the construction of a new wing at the high school, which will feature a gymnasium, science labs and classrooms, and the replacement of the original windows at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. High school library Kathryn Beleckas was awarded tenure. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said since she was hired, Ms. Beleckas has been an excellent resource for students and teachers, and is an important part of the high school team. Mary Jane Budde was named the new district clerk. Dr. Kelly said that the district’s online school climate survey was recently completed and many people in the community responded. Results will be presented at the January board of education meeting, which will be held on January 10th.

Christmas Wishes Amityville Memorial High School students are spreading joy to others this holiday season through the Christmas Magic program. In early December, they shopped at Target to fulfill holiday wishes for 74 children, then went back to the school and wrapped all the gifts. The program was spearheaded by the Warrior Awareness

Program, known as the WAC PAC, under the direction of adviser Jason McGowan. Gifts will go to Christmas Magic, a nonprofit organization that distributes toys to needy children. Senior Erika Garcia said that participating in the program shows that students at Amityville Memorial High School have good character and

are willing to help others. Jayda Davis explained that every child deserves to have a special Christmas, and she was happy to help make that come true. “You get to help kids who don’t have a lot,” added senior Kacey Smith. “It puts a good feeling in my heart, knowing that I’m doing something good.”

The Amityville Union Free School District was honored by the College Board with placement on the eighth annual AP District Honor Roll. To be included on this list, a district had to increase the number of students participating in Advanced Placement courses while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher.
