As popular as making resolutions may be, reports indicate that they’re more popular to make than commit to. For example, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report indicated that 80 percent of resolutions fail. So how can men and women become part of the minority who see their resolutions through to fruition? The following strategies may help: • Plan on being patient. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal.

• Don’t be shy. Sharing your resolution with others is a great way to generate support for your pursuit. And that support can motivate you if you hit a rough patch and keep you on track as you progress toward your goal. By sharing your resolution with others, you’re also indirectly inviting others who might have set similar goals in the past to offer insight and/or advice, which can prove invaluable. • Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don’t be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal. Successful New Year resolutions might be hard to come by. But there are ways to stay the course and see resolutions through to realization.

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness. This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937

The following story shows an example of what is possible when help is provided and hope is not lost! When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now! “The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.” If you wish to inquire about receiving help as well, or you want to volunteer and or donate to this organization, please contact their Development Director, Denise Waterhouse at DWaterhouse@OptionsCL.org!

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Getting a Taste of College Although they are few years away from applying for colleges, ninthgraders from Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District recently learned about the expectations for higher education. More than three dozen students attended College Awareness Day at

Adelphi University on Dec. 4. There were presentations on the admissions process, study abroad opportunities and summer pre-college programs, as well as pep rally, panel discussion, question and answer session, lunch and campus tour. It helped students gain an understanding

about the decisions they need to make in high school to be accepted in the colleges they desire. The 39 Amityville students who attended were chosen based on essays they submitted about honoring veterans and members of the armed forces.

MISSION POSSIBLE - Fifth-graders at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District are finishing their science lesson on the solar system. In Ms. Alpi’s class, the students were selected to be astronauts and complete different missions as part of their training program. The fifth-graders created scale models that demonstrated each planet’s distance from the sun and scale models that represent the size of each planet. and later as the first woman to become president of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. From 1971 to 1984, Major Leftenant-Colón was the nurse at Amityville Memorial High School. She became an inspirational figure for students with her well-known line, “The sky’s the limit.” Lt. Gen. Stayce D. Harris, inspector general of the Air Force, said the library dedication was an “incredible and mostdeserved honor” for Major Leftenant-Colón. She presented her with an artistic piece that blended two photos together on a canvas — one from Leftenant-Colón’s time as a major, and another of the two women together in 2009. Col. Ralph Smith,

retired from the Air Force, presented a gold coin, one of only four in existence, commemorating the Tuskegee Airmen and Airwomen to be housed in the rededicated library. Dr. Kelly explained that as part of the upcoming project to renovate and expand the high school, the library media center will be updated and will include a display for Major Leftenant-Colón featuring numerous artifacts. Several elected officials presented Major LeftenantColón with proclamations included Gordon, a Town of Babylon councilwoman, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and state Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre.

More than one hundred people came out to Amityville Memorial High School on December 10th to pay tribute to an American hero and a local legend. The library media center was renamed in honor of Major Nancy Leftenant-Colón, who had a distinguished career as a nurse in the United States armed forces, and in Amityville, New York. Major Leftenant-Colón was born in 1920 and graduated from Amityville Memorial High School in 1939. She became the first member of her family to pursue higher education by attending the Lincoln School of Nursing in New York City. Her military nursing career spanned from 1945 to 1965, including service as an elite flight nurse with the Air Force. She made history as the first AfricanAmerican woman to serve in the Army nursing corps,

New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. Rice Krispies are a classic breakfast cereal and chicken is always a dinner favorite. Blend the two and you’ve got a fun and delicious dinner recipe that the whole family will love!

What You Will Need:

Rochelle first learned about this recipe when her children were growing up and she was looking for new ways to engage the whole family in dinner. “A good friend of mine told me about a cereal chicken recipe that was passed down through her family, and she assured me that my kids would love it. She was right! We’ve been making it ever since, and now my daughter makes it for her own family.”

Preparation and Baking:

Thin chicken cutlets, pounded Liquid whole beaten eggs in a bowl Large bowl of Rice Krispies Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing Wash chicken cutlets and pat dry Dip each cutlet in liquid egg Roll cutlets in Rice Krispies bowl Place egg-dipped, Rice Krispies covered cutlets on 10x13 baking sheet Drizzle a generous tablespoon (or two) of Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing over the top of each cutlet Bake chicken at 325 degrees for 30 minutes.
