Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

QUESTION: How does oral cancer compare to other cancers? ANSWER: Like other cancers, the successful treatment of cancer of the mouth depends on early detection. This is another good reason to visit your dentist regularly, at least twice a year. Of all the major diseases that can cause death, cancer is one of the most curable – provided treatment begins when the disease is still in its early stages. This means either before symptoms appear or very soon thereafter. You see, in the mouth there are lesions (areas of attacked tissue) that are known to be pre-cancerous. These are almost as readily detectable as skin cancer. Generally, the occurrence is about three times as common in men as women. Contributing factors in mouth cancers are first and foremost, chronic irritations – whether from badly fitting dentures, broken or jagged edges of teeth or fillings – chewing tobacco and excessive pipe smoking. An annual Awareness Week tradition continued with the exchange of “warm fuzzies.” Each string of the “fuzzy” represented a hug, and every Awareness Weekend participant wore their fuzzies throughout the weekend as a demonstration of caring for one another. A few snow flurries couldn’t keep the local seniors from visiting Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and taking part in the annual Senior to Senior Dinner. Organized by the Class of 2014 and its advisers, Alline Stanton and Tracy Wenzler, the evening included a performance by the Madrigal Choir, directed by Gina Occhiogrosso, and music by the Hip Hop Club and its adviser, Yvan Garcia. “We have three senior citizen centers represented here, with close to 300 people in attendance,” said Ms. Stanton. “The kids are really excited to spend time with the seniors doing community service.” Student Activities Coordinator Toni McIntosh added, “This is one of our favorites events of the year, because it’s one of the only times our senior citizens get to interact in a joyful way with our students.” A spirited occasion filled with dinner, dancing and multigenerational interaction, the Senior to Senior Dinner is a highlight for both community residents and senior class alike. Adriana Ludgate, a district alumna, Hall of Achievement member and yearly attendee at the Senior to Senior Dinner, said, “I am so proud of these students and their teachers. I come every year because I have a passion for education and I am proud of everything the students do for the

One day in the early weeks of the school year, Edmund W. Miles Middle School physical education teacher and coach Isha Hamilton became a lifesaver. On September 16th, during soccer tryouts held just outside the school, Ms. Hamilton came to the aid of seventhgrader Kiavelyn AltagraciaNunez, who fell to the ground unconscious while standing along the goal line during a break. Kiavelyn had stopped breathing but Ms. Hamilton was able to resuscitate her using CPR (mouth-tomouth resuscitation, chest compressions and rescue breathing techniques) and the automatic external defibrillator that EWMMS physical education teacher Gregory McCoy ran over to give to her. It was the first time Ms. Hamilton had used the AED for a real emergency in her 11year career in Amityville. “I couldn’t see a breath coming from her mouth,” she recalled. “It was a sigh of relief when I saw that first sign of life back in Kiavelyn.” Ms. Hamilton’s actions captivated not only the attention of the school community, but others outside of Amityville. As a result, Karen and John Acampora, who led a movement in New York State to require AEDs in all schools, recently stopped by a Board of Education meeting to present Ms. Hamilton and Mr. McCoy with another AED for the EWMMS. Kiavelyn was the 75th life saved since New

York State passed the law, following the death of the Acamporas’ son Louis, a Northport High School lacrosse player who was killed in 2000 when a ball struck his chest directly over his heart and he stopped breathing. While CPR was administered, it was later determined that had an AED been present at the site, defibrillation could have been administered sooner, potentially saving Louis’ life. Every coach is required by law to complete AED

training, and according to EWMMS Principal Dr. Michele Darby, all school staff members are encouraged to learn to use the AED. “Ms. Hamilton exemplifies everything we do here at Edmund W. Miles Middle School – teaching, caring and nurturing the whole child and looking out for their overall well-being,” said Dr. Darby. “She is reluctant to take the credit, but we are all very proud of her. She is our hero.”

students of Copiague an opportunity, quite possibly the only opportunity they may have to perform such an activity,” said Mr. Krawchuck. “The students have been studying sharks for the past few weeks, focusing on their behaviors and anatomy with a great emphasis on what makes them the apex hunters of the oceans.” This exploratory procedure allowed the students to observe

firsthand the differences between what they know of the human anatomy and what they can see as the most efficient saltwater hunter. “By performing these dissections, the students were able to leave the room with a significantly better understanding of the inner workings of the sharks’ anatomy and a respect for the process,” explained Mr. Krawchuck.

Students from Edmund W. Miles Middle School visited the World Trade Center in the fall to tour the site, reflect upon what took place there, and gain an appreciation for the spirit of resiliency embodied by all those who were affected and all that comprises the transformed site. One such symbol of this was the “Survivor Tree.” In the wake of September 11th, 2001, workers at Ground Zero recovered the once tall tree that was reduced to an eightfoot stump. The tree was nursed back to health in a

nearby New York City park and grew to be 30 feet tall, sprouting new branches and flowering during springtime. In March 2010, the tree was uprooted by severe storms, but true to its name, survived. In
