becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. Amityville’s Northeast Elementary School’s annual Winter Family Learning Night combined academics with character education while adding a holiday twist. About 50 students in pre-K and kindergarten attended the evening event with their families on December 13th. Stations throughout the gymnasium were staffed by teachers and volunteers from the National Junior Honor Society at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Children filled bags with hot chocolate and marshmallows, then decorated them to look like reindeer, to send to troops. They wrapped books for needy children and made cards for heroes. They were then greeted by a mystery reader, Principal Dr. Pauline Collins, who read “The Missing Mitten Mystery.” Shortly after, Santa arrived to pose for photos and hand out candy canes. Children then had the opportunity to make reindeer cookies using frosting, pretzels and marshmallows. Teacher Tina Smith, who coordinated the event, said the purpose of the night was to further develop the relationship between the school and its families, and provide

Every year, the Town of Babylon collects hundreds of toys through drop boxes at Town offices. The Giving Tree The faculty and staff of Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District have been giving back to the community this holiday season. They have been selecting paper snowﬂakes from the Giving Tree in the lobby and purchasing gifts for students. The program, run

by social worker Debra Lee, is anonymous. Staff members only know the child’s gender, clothing size and desired toys. They then purchase and wrap the gifts, which Ms. Lee distributes to the families. “They want to see the children have a normal Christmas,” Ms. Lee said. “The staff feels the importance of helping

out the community and the response has been overwhelming.” Lee has also partnered with Christmas Magic, a charitable organization that purchases and distributes toys to the less fortunate, to assist more than 40 families at Northeast and Northwest elementary schools.

Forging a Bond Forty students from Islip High School visited Amityville High School on December 7th, getting to know their peers in another district as part of Amityville’s Cultural Exchange program. The purpose of the initiative is to establish new

friendships and create bonds between students from different schools. Led by coordinator Jason McGowan, the students breakfasted together and participated in icebreakers to start the day, then paired up. Each Islip student was brought by their Amityville

partner to the latter’s classes throughout the day. The event concluded with lunch and a debriefing session. Amityville’s students will in turn visit Islip in the spring.

Regional Dialogue More than two dozen students from Amityville Memorial High School attended the 15th annual Long Island Smart Growth Summit hosted by Vision Long Island on December 2nd at Crest Hollow Country Club. This year, 25 Amityville students in Matt Griess’ Advanced Placement government and public policy classes were invited to attend. They were able to network with more than 1,000 civic and business leaders, developers, environmentalists, design professionals, business leaders and other students, along with federal, state, county, town and village

elected officials. The event featured networking, a trade show, nearly 20 workshops, a youth summit and sessions on regional and local issues about mixed-use development. The students attended the first general session in the main ballroom. After the keynote speaker, moderator Eric Alexander asked if there were any questions. Amityville student Christian Bethea walked to the dais and asked if he and his classmates would be able to find jobs that pay enough to allow them to stay on Long Island after they graduate from college.

Two other students, Stephen Gaon and Tyler Gill, participated in the session on Protecting Water and Sewer Investments. They spoke with Adrienne Esposito, from Citizens Campaign for the Environment, and Peter Scully, a deputy county executive for Suffolk County, about their own research interests. The field trip gave the students the opportunity to be in a professional setting and network and share ideas on projects with Long Island’s top experts. The group hopes to be invited back again next year.

Amityville Memorial High School students are learning the value of charity. Members of the WAC PAC club shopped for presents and then wrapped the gifts, which will benefit children in shelters. The gifts will go to Christmas Magic, a nonprofit organization which distributes toys to needy children. Amityville

students went to Target, where they had a budget of $75 per child to buy items on their holiday wish list. They then got together several days after school to wrap presents in the lobby as Christmas music played in the background. WAC PAC adviser Jason McGowan delivered the wrapped gifts to Christmas Magic’s office, known

as the North Pole. He said Amityville students fulfilled wishes for 70 children this year. “It’s a great opportunity that we can help other kids who aren’t as blessed to have everything we have this holiday season,” said WAC PAC President Eshti Sookram.
