Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

CULTIVATING KINDNESS WITH ART - Students in Jennifer Dibble’s art classes worked on a collaborative project at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Using watercolor paints, they made colorful feathers that were then used to create a peace dove on a bulletin board, which every student passes by on their way to the cafeteria and gymnasium. The middle school is designated as a No Place for Hate school by the Anti-Defamation League, and the creation of the dove is part of the ongoing initiative to foster a culture of compassion and kindness. In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age

Technology is creating new ways for students in the Amityville Union Free School District to express themselves, and third graders at Northwest Elementary School recently got to add a digital component to their Thanksgiving research projects. Every student in Lori Heavey’s class completed a report on one of three topics: the first Thanksgiving, traditional Thanksgiving foods and harvest festivals around

the world. In addition to writing a paper, each child had to summarize his or her research for a short video. They used the Padcaster equipment, which included an iPad and holder, light, microphone, tripod and green screen background. The short videos were made on iMovie. Using green screen technology, each student could superimpose a picture related to his or her topic in the background. Ms. Heavey explained that

this activity was possible through the district’s Skin in the Game initiative, which included training for two of her students on the use of the equipment. Moise Desulme and Kirsten Lewis served as the directors, helping their classmates create the Thanksgiving videos. For an upcoming assignment, Ms. Heavey’s students will dabble in persuasive writing by crafting restaurant reviews, which will be accompanied by videos.

The floats of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade inspired a STEM activity in third grade classrooms at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Students in Adrienne Hartung’s and Julie Kirschen’s classes built models of parade floats with balloons. After reading “Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet, watching video footage of the famed

parade and studying simple machines in science, students got to work on their projects. Working in groups, they brainstormed ideas and planned out their designs before building. In addition to balloons, the young engineers had plastic and wooden sticks to support their floats which had to rise above a flat cardboard surface. The task incorporated problem-solving strategies as children overcame

different challenges, such as the balloons popping when connecting the sticks, to successfully complete their floats. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
