irst-grade students at Copiague's Deauville Gardens West Elementary School recently received a viral Skype visit from children's author Jonathan Emmett. Prior to the Skype session, first-grade teachers selected one of Emmett's published stories for him to read to the class. During his visit, he used animated narrative voices to engage and interact with first-graders while he read The Princess And The Pig.

Circus Program Visits .-----------------------------------------------------.~ ®1!'-'J;H~~~~@~ Students at Copiague's Susan E. Wiley Elementary School put their juggling and balancing skills to the test in an interactive PTA-sponsored program provided by the National Circus Project. Led by National Circus Project artist-instructors, the program kicked off with a school wide assembly that demonstrated some of the unique tricks students would learn during their physical education classes. In each workshop, students were trained in skills such as scarf juggling, balancing

plates and devil sticks. The National Circus Project is an educational outreach program focused on physical education and arts-in-education. Through authentic circus training exercises, students learned the dedication and skills required to be a circus performer. Choreographed by artist-instructors, the week concluded with a performance by fifth-grade students, who showed off their new skills in a oneof-a-kind student circus show.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug (LICADD) Dependence received a $2,500 grant from The Laura B. Vogler Foundation, Inc. for the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) program. "Through these funds, LICADD can continue to expand and enhance prevention program that helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years." says Executive Director Steve Chassman. TGFD program is a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) approved evidence-based program to teach children in grades K through 12 about the potential health consequences associated with alcohol, drug and tobacco use. In addition to LICADD's education and prevention services, LICADD is fully equipped to provide on-going expert assistance to educators and when necessary can be a bridge to treatment

Chopped Challenge Nearly a dozen Suffolk County Community College Culinary program students will jump out of the frying pan into the fire to compete in a Choppedlike culinary competition in which students will receive a mystery basket of ingredients and must turn them into a mouthwatering dish. The competition is similar to the popular reality television show "Chopped" airing on the Food

Network. The judges -- five of Suffolk's faculty chefs -will evaluate each student's creation on creativity, presentation and taste. The public is invited to witness the student chefs in action. Will the chefs be as cool as a cucumber? Can they cut the mustard? Who will bring home the bacon? Stay tuned! The top chef will win a seven-night stay at the

Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Fla., and an opportunity to work under the supervision of the resort's executive chef. The contest's "Battle for the Beach" prize also includes round-trip airfare and ground transportation. The battle date is Friday, December 12th, at 2 p.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 East Main Street in Riverhead.

Virtual Author Visit First-grade students at Copiague's Deauville Gardens West Elementary School recently received a viral Skype visit from children's author Jonathan Emmett. Prior to the Skype session, first-grade teachers selected one of Emmett's published stories for him to read to the class. During his visit, Emmett used animated narrative voices to engage and interact with firstgraders while he read his story, "The Princess and

In their efforts to reach out to the community and to answer questions on the role of a Board trustee, the Copiague Board of Education hosted a BOE 101 workshop. During the informal gathering, the Board welcomed district residents who may be interested in running for the volunteer position and discussed the

various responsibilities and time commitments undertaken once elected. Other areas addressed included how the Board functions together as a unit, as well as with the superintendent of schools and district clerk; mandatory training for school board members as required by New York State law; and the importance

of setting and updating district policies. Each attendee was provided with a packet of important information including a brochure on what they need to know when running for the school board created by the New York State School Boards Association.

DISNEY WORLD Walt Disney World is the place to be for a vacation, or a celebration. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a wonderful place comprised of four spectacular theme parks . The names are Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Magic Kingdom is a magical place. There is so much to do. You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters. Next, we have Animal Kingdom where you can take a safari ride to see all of the animals from A-Z.

Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios. Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future . The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.

There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Barna's at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Barna's, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Council Honorees The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) recently held its Champions of Children 29th Anniversary Luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The event honored two Long Island champions: New York State Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney and John A. Rizzo, economist, the Long Island Association, and professor of Economics, Stony Brook University.

Personality Of The Month

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has named Suffolk Community College Men's Soccer Coach Frank Vertullo as its Personality of the Month for December. Vertullo, 34, of Babylon, coached the Suffolk County Community College Sharks to the

National Championship last month, a repeat of his 2010 accomplishment. Entering the junior college Final Four as the fourth seed with a 19-40 record, Suffolk played number one seed and host, Herkimer Community College, on November 14th. A twelfth minute goal

by Romario Hulea was all the Sharks needed to avenge their 2013 loss to Herkimer in the National Championship game and advance, 1-0. The Sharks continued as underdogs in the national title game on November 16 against number two seed Richland Community College from Texas, who previously defeated them 5-2 in September. Joseph Lopez and Hulea scored for the Sharks and goalkeeper Jon Zapata, named championship game MVP, made six saves in the second half to preserve Suffolk's 2-1 lead and secure the championship title. Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said Coach Vertullo is an inspiration not only to student athletes, but to the College Community. "Coach Vertullo's leadership, inspiration, and ability to motivate has

helped deliver two National Championships to Suffolk County Community College by our very talented and accomplished student-athletes," McKay said. "Congratulations," he added. "There are so many factors that are involved in winning multiple national championships. Consistency, recruiting, experience and creating a family atmosphere within the program are the key components. The success of the program has also helped in the recruiting process of potential student-athletes wanting to leave home to play at Suffolk even without the convenience of campus housing. However, just bringing in talent is not always good enough, " Vertullo, who was named Coach of the Tournament, said. "My student-athletes have always given me 100% and have done everything

They also draw on my experiences from coaching in eight Final Fours in the last 14 years. As a player, Vertullo played in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), for the North Babylon Bulldogs and Massapequa TNT. Frank also competed for three years on the LIJSL Select Team and two years on the Eastern New York ODP. Vertullo played at Dowling College from 1997 to 2000 and was

Conference Rookie of the Year, All-Conference three times, captain of the team for three seasons and starting center back. He also played for the New York Freedoms of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 2002 and 2003. Vertullo served as Dowling's assistant coach from 2001 to 2006, helping lead the Golden Lions to four NCAA Division 2 Final Fours and the 2006 National Championship. Vertullo took over the Suffolk Community College men's program in 2007 and has led the Sharks to five Region XV titles and two National Championships, been honored as Region XV Coach of the Year four times and NSCM National Coach of the Year in 2010. Vertullo also won the New York Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NYMISOA) Sportsmanship Award in 2008.
