Spirit of the Season Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.
And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

Carnival for a Cause The Builders Club at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its first Carnival Night on November 17th. For a small admission
fee, students received 10 carnival tickets which gave them a chance to visit each activity including a ring toss, bean bag toss, slime-making table, photo booth, wheel of fortune,

Honing Skills Student-musicians from Copiague School District’s elementary schools and Copiague Middle School participated in the Long Island Flute Festival held at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on November 18th. The Long Island Flute Festival is organized by the Long Island Flute Club and offers the opportunity to flutists of all ages to participate in a day of
performances, workshops and concerts. Copiague student-musicians had the chance to work on a solo piece at their level, rehearse music in an ensemble setting with students from other schools at their level, watch a concert given by world-renowned flutist Robert Dick, and perform their ensemble pieces as a group in a concert for their parents. The district congratulates

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation to enable the program to provide information about breast reconstruction. The funds will be used to create bilingual educational materials in print and online. Two bilingual social workers regularly meet with breast cancer patients at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) Breast and/or Oncology Clinic and address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Program, “This additional funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation will
allow us to enhance the dialogue between the social workers and patients about breast reconstruction, as this is an option and right that many women are not aware of, specifically underserved populations.” Federal law signed in 1998 requires health group insurance plans to cover breast reconstruction and New York State requires healthcare professionals to discuss reconstruction with patients prior to cancer removing surgery. Bilingual social workers address barriers that interfere with the continuity of treatment including transportation, food, legal services and financial needs. Efforts are made to connect patients to community agencies and coalitions and help facilitate applications. In addition, patients are offered the opportunity to address issues related
to reconstruction. Each patient is encouraged to explore her unique feelings and needs surrounding her breast cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery. By providing a safe place to discuss body image, intimacy and fears, each patient is enabled to make an informed decision reflecting her unique needs. Social Workers are also available to support each patient throughout the process and help to facilitate ongoing communication with her plastic surgeon and treatment team. Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony

Cracking the Code library to open a series of locks. The project, which focused on world religions, was planned by librarian Kathryn Beleckas, foreign language teacher Reynaldo Bueno and social studies teacher Matthew Tomasi. Students learned about six religions - Animism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and
Judaism - by searching for clues. At the Animism table, students had to put together a puzzle that created an animal picture and had a secret message in invisible ink. For Buddhism, they had to identify the spread of the religion to open a directional lock. The clues were in English to help
students improve their language proficiency. Once the class cracked the final code, they opened a box that had some reflection cards on the lesson, as well as a treat for their hard work. “It’s a way to get students engaged in the content,”
Ms. Beleckas said of the Breakout EDU kits, of which there are four at the high school. “The library is a nice place to do it, as it gives you space to work with.” She said that Breakout EDU kits could be used in any subject and for any
topic. Supplies include number, letter, key and directional locks along with boxes, an invisible ink pen, black light and hint cards. Teachers can use pre-planned lessons or create their own, as she did for the world religions activity.

Creating through Coding With a growing demand for computer programmers, the Amityville Union Free School District is giving its students a chance to explore career possibilities with lessons in coding. The district has introduced the kidOYO program, an online educational community that delivers personalized project-based learning in computer science and engineering. Edmund W. Miles Middle School math teacher Dr. Linda Pfaffe has made this the focus of her seventh-grade STEAM class, a new elective that meets every other day. Throughout the year, students will learn five different programming languages, including commonly used ones like Scratch and Python. They
began by making simple video games in which the arrow keys control movement. Challenges will become tougher as the year progresses, and students move at their own pace. “ C o m p u t e r programming is an essential skill for today’s students,” Dr. Pfaffe said. “In a world where the internet can satisfy almost any question in seconds, technical skills will enable them to succeed.” Dr. Pfaffe added that while many students are adept at using technology, they do not necessarily understand what makes it work. Coding is the logic and science that controls technology, and by learning to code students move from consumers to producers. She explained that programming is very
literal and precise, which gives students a chance to develop their problemsolving skills. In addition to her own instruction, Dr. Pfaffe provides students with video tutorials on computer programming. KidOYO offers a moderated bulletin board so the youngsters can ask questions and share ideas. Much class time is devoted to independent inquiry in which students are thinking, collaborating, designing and refining. Seventh-grader Agin Shehu said he enjoys programming because it allows him to be creative and explore new ideas. He said he would consider a career in computer science and this class gives him a head start for the future.

Fundraising Strides The Copiague Middle School Builders Club, under the advisement of Maria Ostrofsky, has been busy in October and November with different fundraising efforts. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, the Copiague
Middle School Builders Club walked at the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Jones Beach, where they raised $2,709 to be donated to the American Cancer Society. Prior to Halloween, the students held a trick-
or-treat fundraiser from November 17th-30th to benefit UNICEF. The Builders Club members had a raffle to guess the number of candies in the jar. Donations for UNICEF will be collected until December 4th.
