Students of the Month

Turkeys in Disguise Via a long-distance learning activity, secondgrade students in Maryanne Basso’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District worked hard to try to save a turkey from being eaten on Thanksgiving on November 16th. The students teamed up with another second-grade class in New York State via video conference. Each class had to disguise turkeys to save them from being eaten on Thanksgiving.

Christmas Trees

The two classes took turns playing a game of 20 questions, trying to guess which turkey from a bingo card was the turkey that was being “saved.” Students learned about map skills, writing and communication as they prepared for the video conference. They also shared information about their community and learned about the community on the video conference.

“Quintessential” was the word that made sixthgrader Shameer Rose the repeat champion in the annual spelling bee at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Shameer won for the second straight year and will advance to the Scripps Howard regional spelling bee at Hofstra University in February. The school spelling bee, under the direction of fourth-grade teacher Howard Reiner, began with classroom competitions. The top five students from each class then participated in schoolwide semifinals, and 27 advanced to the finals held the evening of November 16th. With words getting progressively harder, Shameer’s victory came in the sixth round. The school also hosted a bilingual spelling bee that

My Buddy occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Students asked questions and documented what they learned on a Participation Passport. “It’s such a great learning experience for the students and a great way for them to understand Veterans Day,” said Jaclyn O’Hagan, chairwoman of the social studies department. “We want our students to honor the veterans and to learn from them.” As veterans arrived, they were met with a colorful banner in the lobby with

all of their names written on red stars. Members of the National Junior Honor Society escorted them to the classes. Among the speakers was Amityville Board of Education Trustee Juan Leon, who served in the Army from 2003 to 2010 was deployed to Afghanistan. He shared many photos from his service abroad in a presentation to students. “We have veterans from all different eras coming here and sharing their experiences,” Mr. Leon said. “It’s living history right in our community.”

The Ultimate Champions Taekwondo School, located at 903 Montauk Highway in Copiague, scored medals when several students, led by Master Han, completed in the Amateur Athletic Union Taekwondo National Championship, held in Fort Lauderdale Florida from July 4th to July 8th. The team earned 1 Gold Medal and 2 Silver Medals in the Sparring Category. Jordan Harvey won the VETERANS SHARE - Juan Leon, an Amityville Board of Education trustee and Army gold medal and his twin veteran, engaged students at Edmund W. Brother) also took the silver medal. Jaden and Jordan attend Allegheny Elementary School in Lindenhurst, and Preston attends school in Queens. This was a big accomplishment for this small Taekwondo school in Copiague. This event hosted competitors from all over the United States, such as California, Michigan, Ohio, Connecticut, Puerto Rico and Mexico/Texas. Two students from the school also competed at the USA Taekwondo Nationals Championship

in Richmond, Virginia from July 4th to July 10th. Alejandro Penalo competed in the Forms category and came in 5th place. Brendan Mades competed in Breaking and Forms. Thank you to the parents of Copiague Taekwondo who held fundraisers to raise the money to send the five students to the Nationals Competition. Since the Nationals, they have continued to compete at the Taekwondo Festival in Baltimore, Maryland and at Queens College, taking 1st and 2nd.
