Cooking Your Own Meals Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or takeout foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals. John Moore, DO, an Aetna medical director and senior health specialist, says that cooking can be good for helping to stave off cognitive decline. Dr. Moore notes that, when cooking, the mind is put to use following a recipe and learning new skills and tasks. Furthermore, cooking for oneself can boost seniors’ self-confidence, reassuring them that they can handle an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.

Students Go On A Virtual Career Exploration With so many possible careers to choose from, students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School get a look each year at their options during Career Week. The program, held during the first week of November, was virtual this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so third, fourth and fifth graders still gained a lot of knowledge that will help with their future planning. Since speakers were not able to visit the school in person, many parents,

community members and local merchants submitted videos in which they talked about their respective careers, such as job requirements and responsibilities. Guidance counselor Kimberly Balducci compiled the videos, which represented a wide range of professions in the construction, education, emergency services, entertainment, health care and science and engineering industries. Teachers then shared the videos through their

Several students also had the opportunity to check out an Amityville fire truck, Amityville police car and Suffolk County police car, while learning about the role of first responders. ARNOLD “TONY” PRISCO 1934 - 2020

With the passing of Arnold “Tony” Prisco Sr. on October 28, 2020, Copiague has suffered the loss of an illustrious resident. A businessman, entrepreneur, and strong advocate for the Copiague community, his sudden passing has impacted so many family and friends. Born on December 22, 1934, to Anthony and Nicolena Prisco, he lived his entire life in Copiague in a very traditional Italian household. His father built the ﬁrst bowling alley and Italian restaurant on Long Island. Tony’s Pizza, became Arnie’s ﬁrst job, as the boy placing the pins on the alleys. Always working, his father expected his wife, Nicolena, to prepare a nightly home-cooked for him. Thus, Arnie would walk the mile from his home to the bowling alley every night to bring his father dinner. When reminiscing, Arnie would trace his work ethic directly to his own upbringing.

A high point in his life was when he was Chapter Director for Harley-Davidson for several years in the 80’s. Riding his motorcycle with fellow bikers was both a release and source of service. His connection to Blizzard Fence was evident in his daily 4:30 PM call to the ofﬁce. Ofﬁce manager, Donna Farina, looked forward to sharing the news of the day and “could count on his call like clockwork.” He had a true insight and a sense of people which is why his daughterin-law, Lori, clearly valued his expertise. “I could call Dad anytime and he would often advise and help me navigate the intricacies of the business and my own life. He became my second father.”

Arnie was the original “Greaser” and in the summer of 1950 when his future wife, Lorraine, saw him in his white convertible on the East Venice Bridge, she knew he was the one for her. They were married in 1956 when he was 22 and she was 19 and began their life together in a bungalow on East Minerva in Lindenhurst. A son, Anthony, and daughter Debbie, soon completed the family. Arnie’s career was not a straight path. He worked for Typhoon Fence learning the art of being a salesman. Arnie was the owner of the Cleaners on Oak Street. There he learned the essential skills required to manage a business. After purchasing the iconic Prisco Building from his father, he harnessed all these valuable insights, and launched Blizzard Fence in 1960. Thus, would begin a forty-year career that he developed and cherished. Arnie was the quintessential business owner, debonair and suave; he toiled around town in his Cadillac with his famous Fence 1 license plate! He nurtured his commitment to Copiague by becoming a member and donating to causes through community service organizations such as The Kiwanis Club of Copiague, and the Copiague Chamber of Commerce. He was truly passionate about investing in the progress of Copiague’s business community. This is best illustrated when he was once on vacation in Puerto Rico with close friends. His daughter, Debbie, so articulately encapsulated her father calling him, “A great American. He will truly be missed; the august family patriarch, his chair in the Blizzard Office will always remain his.

His interest in serving the community led him to be considered for Babylon Town Council Seat. Although, not successful in pursuing this career path, he became a force in community politics and was instrumental in promoting Madeleine Fitzgibbon to prominence and having her name considered for judgeship which she attained in 1994. Judge Fitzgibbon fondly reminisced, “That experience working with Tony is when we went from a working friendship to a family relationship.” She recalled that Arnie’s mindset was such

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his son, Anthony, daughter-in-law, Lori, daughter, Debbie, son-in-law, Charlie, eight grandchildren, eleven greatgrandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He will be waked at Johnston’s Funeral Home in Lindenhurst. A funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of The Assumption in Copiague. He will lie in rest at St. Charles Cemetery. He was an advocate for healthy living and went to the gym until he was in his early 80’s. He had a wide range of friends that included founding members of the community, politicians, and most importantly, encouraged new businesses and new voices. Jen Madden, shared that her husband, Chris Madden, and she would often stop into Blizzard Fence to visit with Arnie because he would inspire them to pursue actions that would beneﬁt Copiague. He loved nothing more than to sit down, have a cup of coffee and share narratives about the past and Copiague’s history.

Service To Country Is Appreciated To mark Veterans Day, students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School and Amityville Memorial High School learned about the brave men and women who served in the United States military and why their sacrifices are important. At the middle school, social studies teacher Frank O’Brian and hall monitor Sykes Reese spoke to students through a Google Meet videoconference about their experiences in the Navy. They each presented a slideshow with photos and video clips, then participated in a virtual question and answer session with students. Middle school students

also wrote letters to veterans or current members of the military. They had the option of writing a thank-you letter to Mr. O’Brien, Mr. Reese, Amityville graduates Esteban Idrovo and Rene Idrovo who are presently serving in the armed forces, a veteran they know personally, or a generic letter to be sent through SupportOurTroops.org. At Amityville Memorial High School, three current servicemen participated in a halfhour videoconference with students during their seminar period on Nov. 12. All classrooms tuned in and students learning remotely could also watch

from their Chromebooks. The speakers included both active duty military personnel and reservists. Assistant Brian Suckle, who coordinated the program and facilitated the discussion, said they talked about their reasons for enlisting, the branches of the military they belong to, their military experiences and career opportunities in the armed forces. They also took questions from students and teachers. Earlier in the week, high school students learned about the six core principles of the Medal of Honor, the most prestigious personal military decoration, and watched videos about past medal winners.

Amityville Theater Student Named Scholar-Artist For 2020

Shaakirah NazimHarris of the Amityville UFSD, who is studying theater at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was recently named a Scholar-Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Newsday. She earned the honor for excellence as a practicing theater student and for superior academic achievement. For Shaakirah NazimHarris, being recognized as a Scholar Artist is a dream come true. “Since I’ve been a freshman, I’ve thought that this award is the coolest thing ever,” she said of the achievement. “Getting recognized for your work as a creative is extremely important.” It was at LIHSA that Shaakirah came into her own as both a musician and a performer. In her

songwriting class, she discovered her love for creating original music, and she and her classmates formed their own band, “Cocheo and the Kids.” LIHSA has also inspired her to perform at her home school, where she costarred as Dragon in a cast of 40 for the Amityville Memorial High School

Drama Club production of Shrek the Musical. “My experience at LIHSA has really helped me to gain a deeper understanding of why I love the arts so much,” Shaakirah said. “I am so grateful to be here. Every day I am surrounded by talented people who think outside of the box, and my teachers continuously inspire me. Having teachers who care so much about us and are so dedicated to their students has really helped me to succeed.” Shaakirah plans to study musical theater and drama at college, and to eventually become a bicoastal entertainer, creating and performing her own music. “I see myself on stage, and recording music for the world to hear,” she said. “As long as I am creating something, I am happy.”

2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease. If enough people are

resistant to the cause of a disease, whether it is a bacteria or virus, that disease has nowhere to go and the spread stalls, according to WebMD. How Does Herd Immunity Occur? There are two ways that herd immunity can occur. The first is when resistance develops naturally when

the body is exposed to the virus or bacteria. At this point, the immune system will produce antibodies to fight off the infection. After recovery, these antibodies are still circulating, and should exposure to the same disease occur again, the body can defend against another infection. Another way that herd immunity occurs is through vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that when the majority of people are vaccinated, it creates the same disease lockdown - fewer people get sick and fewer germs are able to spread from person to person. What’s more, even those who are not vaccinated, such as newborn babies or those who may not be able to get vaccinated due to chronic illnesses, will get some level of protection because the disease will

not be spreading as readily within their communities. When Is Herd Immunity Reached? When enough of a population is immune to a pathogen it prevents further spread and herd immunity is apparent. Diseases are different and herd immunity is reached based on the pathogen’s reproduction number, or R0. Essentially this boils down to how contagious the pathogen in question is. WebMD says the R0 tells the average number of people that a single person with the virus can infect if those people aren’t already immune. The higher the R0, the greater number of people will need to be resistant to reach herd immunity. Measles, which is very contagious at an R0 of 12 to 18, requires 93 to 95 percent of the population to be immune for herd immunity to be reached.

The World Health Organization estimates the R0 for COVID-19 to be between 2 and 3. This means between 40 and 70 percent of the population will need to be immune to halt the spread. In the case of COVID-19, it’s still unclear whether anyone can get reinfected, and whether antibodies produced for one strain can fend off another strain

of this novel coronavirus. This reinfection mystery is what makes herd immunity - both through a vaccine or through natural exposure - challenging for epidemiologists in relation to COVID-19. Herd immunity is an important factor in disease prevention. Getting the facts about this phenomenon is important.
