At the dawn of the holiday season, there seems to be so much to fit into a relatively short period of time, including planning celebrations and shopping. The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. ‘You Call The Shots’ - United Way Of Long Amityville Memorial High School Warriors Island Receives Grant From CDC Foundation Celebrate Homecoming 2021
United Way of Long Island is being funded to support effective community outreach centered on communities of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in order to share accurate, culturally appropriate information about the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines as well as link adults to vaccine services. United Way, with funding through the CDC Foundation, will work to increase local COVID-19 vaccination rates through the initiative You Call the Shots—Protecting Communities, Empowering Families and Stopping Myths. United Way’s program addresses the inequities in vaccination coverage that exist across different racial and ethnic populations on Long Island by improving access and raising knowledge through educational campaigns to decrease hesitancy and overcome refusal to vaccinate. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 374,000 cases and 6,452 deaths, and residents continue to suffer the consequences: severe illness, job loss, decrease in income, unstable housing, separation and isolation. These numbers, in combination with vaccine data, illustrate the critical need for increased vaccine coverage. Compared to the overall Long Island population, vaccination rates differ greatly among African Americans and Latinos: 6.4% of African Americans and 12.6% of Latinos have received at least one dose. The CDC Foundation helps the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) save and improve lives by unleashing the power of collaboration between CDC, philanthropies, corporations, organizations and individuals to protect the health, safety and security of America and the world. Since January 2020, the CDC Foundation through the support of its donors has addressed a wide variety of critical
needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work includes providing personal protective equipment for frontline responders; care kits for schools, jails and the unhoused; studies examining the impact of COVID-19; work to strengthen communities and community-based organizations to improve vaccination uptake and address misinformation; projects focused on health more than 100 projects focused on health equity; and much more. United Way of Long Island’s You Call the Shots will focus its work in six communities designated by New York State as high priority for increasing vaccination rates: Elmont, Hempstead, Freeport, Huntington Station, Brentwood and Bay Shore. The organization will utliize its existing partnerships with corporate entities, government, labor, community leaders, school systems, health providers and over 100 funded communitybased agencies to increase vaccine confidence and uptake through: Bilingual community navigators who will connect Long Islanders to vaccination sites and providers. They will visit and speak with residents about the importance and safety of vaccines, while providing information on vaccination sites and availability. Navigators will work with state and local health departments to ensure pop-up clinics are located in areas where and when needed, as well as schedule appointments, arrange transportation when necessary, and provide facts about COVID-19 and
the vaccine in multiple languages. Leveraging trusted community-level spokespersons to provide consistent, factual and compelling science-based messages in support of vaccination. Spokespersons will be trained on COVID-19 facts and equipped with compelling scientific information to engage with residents and diseminate information through local media outlets, social media, faith-based venues, community events and other community-based, culturally appropriate venues. Building trust with community members to address the concerns people have about COVID-19. To increase confidence in and encourage vaccination, United Way of Long Island spokespersons and health care partners will help combat misinformation, stop myths and build public trust through community outreach and education forums. Funding for this effort is made possible through a subaward from the CDC Foundation and is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) financial assistance award totaling $25,660,048 with 100 percent funding from CDC/HHS. As a tradition in October, Amityville Memorial High School welcomed students, alumni, family, and friends for its annual Homecoming game and celebration on Saturday, October 2, 2021. A sea of red spread across the football field bleachers as hundreds of Amityville fans cheered the players as they gamely battled a tough Islip team. During the week leading up to Homecoming Saturday, students participated in Spirit Week. On Monday, students wore matching outfits for Twin Day. For Mix Match Tuesday, students wore outfits that didn’t match. Wednesday brought students dressed as rockstars, and for Multicultural Day Thursday, students wore clothing representative of their culture and heritage. Spirit Week ended with Spirit Day Friday, with students adorning Warrior red jerseys, sweatshirts and pants. “Homecoming is such an important and funpacked day for our school community. It’s a day to show off our Warrior
Spirit Week - Multicultural Day pride and to support our athletics, academics, and extracurricular activities,” said Mr. Edward Plaia, Principal of Amityville Memorial High School. “It was clear that everyone had a great time together, excited to be able to have a Homecoming celebration after last year’s cancellation due to the Pandemic.”
In addition to the traditional Homecoming football game, the day’s festivities included a parade, performances by the Warrior’s Marching Band and Cheerleaders, and the crowning of Homecoming King and Queen, Jonathon Jacas and Andielynn Llamas.

people’s expectations about Americans looking a certain way. About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively,
instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. I also translated most of my CPR and first aid materials into Kyrgyz,” says Lee, who notes that, “Volunteering opens so many doors in the future, and the people you meet along the way will help you.” To learn more about Peace Corps or to connect with a recruiter, visit peacecorps.gov. “Volunteers are international cultural ambassadors representing the United States. That’s why it’s so important our body of volunteers actually reflects the diversity of the country,” says Spahn.
Eating about ½ cup of walnuts every day for two years modestly lowered levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, known as “bad cholesterol,” and reduced the number of total LDL particles and small LDL particles in healthy, older adults, according to new research published today in the American Heart Association’s flagship journal Circulation. Walnuts are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid), which have been shown to have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular health. “Prior studies have shown that nuts in general, and walnuts in particular, are associated with lower rates of heart disease and stroke. One of the reasons is that they lower LDLcholesterol levels, and now we have another reason: they improve the quality of LDL particles,” said study co-author Emilio Ros, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Lipid Clinic at the Endocrinology and Nutrition Service of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona in Spain. “LDL particles come in various sizes. Research has shown that small, dense LDL particles are more often associated with atherosclerosis, the plaque or fatty deposits that build up in the arteries. Our study goes beyond LDL cholesterol levels to get a complete picture of all of the lipoproteins and the impact of eating walnuts daily on their potential to improve cardiovascular risk.” In a sub-study of the Walnuts and Healthy Aging study, a large, two-year randomized controlled trial examining whether walnuts contribute to healthy aging, researchers evaluated if regular walnut consumption, regardless of a person’s diet or where they live, has beneficial effects on lipoproteins. This study was conducted from May 2012 to May 2016 and involved 708 participants between the ages of 63 and 79 (68% women) who were healthy, independent-living
adults residing in Barcelona, Spain, and Loma Linda, California. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: active intervention and control. Those allocated to the intervention group added about a half cup of walnuts to their usual daily diet, while participants in the control group abstained from eating any walnuts. After two years, participants’ cholesterol levels were tested, and the concentration and size of lipoproteins were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This advanced test enables physicians to more accurately identify lipoprotein features known to relate to the risk of cardiovascular disease. The two-year study had a 90% retention rate (632 participants completed the study). Complete lipoprotein analyses were available in 628. Among key findings of all study participants: At 2 years, participants in the walnut group had lower LDL cholesterol levels - by an average of 4.3 mg/dL, and total cholesterol was lowered by an average of 8.5 mg/dL. Daily consumption of walnuts reduced the number of total LDL particles by 4.3% and small LDL particles by 6.1%. These changes in LDL particle concentration and composition are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Intermediate Density Lipoprotein (IDL) cholesterol also decreased. It is known that IDL cholesterol is a precursor to LDL and refers to a density between that of low-density and verylow-density lipoproteins. In the last decade, IDL cholesterol has emerged as a relevant lipid cardiovascular risk factor independent of LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol changes among the walnut group differed by sex; in men, LDL cholesterol fell by 7.9% and in women by 2.6%. “While this is not a tremendous decrease
in LDL cholesterol, it’s important to note that at the start of the study all our participants were quite healthy, free of major noncommunicable diseases. However, as expected in an elderly population, close to 50% of participants were being treated for both high blood pressure and hypercholesterolemia. Thanks in part to statin treatment in 32%, the average cholesterol levels of all the people in our study were normal,” Ros said. “For individuals with high blood cholesterol levels, the LDL cholesterol reduction after a nut-enriched diet may be much greater.” “Eating a handful of walnuts every day is a simple way to promote cardiovascular health. Many people are worried about unwanted weight gain when they include nuts in their diet,” Ros said. “Our study found that the healthy fats in walnuts did not cause participants to gain weight.” The major limitation of this investigation is that both participants and researchers knew who was and was not eating walnuts. However, the study did involve two very different populations with distinct diets. “The outcomes were similar in both groups, so we can safely apply the results of this study to other populations,” Ros said. More research is also needed to clarify the different LDL results in men and women. According to the American Heart Association, walnuts are especially high in omega-3 fatty acids, the same heart-healthy fat found in oily fish. A serving size is a small handful or 1.5 ounces of whole nuts or 2 tablespoons of nut butter.
