WWII Veteran Frank Liquorie Honored

On Sunday November 8th, Frank Liquorie of Whitestone/Edgewater Park (the Bronx) received the WWII Victory Medal and a plaque for his service in the Navy during WWII. The ceremony was held at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park in Throgs Neck in the Bronx. The ceremony also celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. Frank is the father of long time South Bay Neighbor News Account Executive Bob Liquorie as well as Geraldine Gress and Richard Liquorie. He is father-in-law to Barbara Liquorie, Georgette Liquorie and Ken Gress. Frank Liquorie was born in 1928 to first generation Italian American parents. He spent his childhood playing stickball, baseball and basketball

all in the confines of his South Bronx neighborhood. Frank attended St. Jerome’s School and onto Rice High School. Then came the war. Like most young men of his generation, Frank waited impatiently for his 17th birthday, when accompanied by his parents, he enlisted in the United States Navy. It was time for him to do his patriotic duty. The year was 1945. He was immediately sent to boot camp at Camp Perry, Virginia. From there onto Bayone, New Jersey on a special detail to prepare the dry docked United States ships for decommission. On to Norfork Virginia where he was assigned to the Destroyer Gyatt DD712 and shipped out to the Mediterranean where they swept for mines.
As the war was coming to an end, he went to Italy where the Italian Navy was being disbanded. His fleet inspected the Italian ships for sea worthiness and handed over many ships to the Russians. The 6th fleet then continued on to cruise the Mediterranean and stopped at many ports on the Good Neighbor Policy. These ports included but not limited to Gibraltar, Malta, Greece, Italy, and back to North Africa. The war was over. He returned to Boston and cruised onto the Caribbean and Central America continuing the Navy’s Good Neighbor Policy. Frank was discharged in 1949 and returned home to his wife Irene and large extended family. He was 21.

John Moore, DO, an Aetna medical director and senior health specialist, says that cooking can be good for helping to stave off cognitive decline. Dr. Moore notes that, when cooking, the mind is put to use following a recipe and learning new skills and tasks. Furthermore, cooking for oneself can boost seniors’ self-confidence, reassuring them that they can handle an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.

Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

Town of Babylon Hometown Heroes Banner Program Announced Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman and Veteran Advisory Board Chairman DuWayne Gregory and the rest of the Town Board announced a partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst to hang banners across the town featuring the names and photos of service men and women from the Town of Babylon. The program, currently administered by the Lindenhurst Kiwanis in the Village of Lindenhurst, is an effort to honor veterans while beatifying downtown areas. Applications for the program will become available in January of 2021, with banners hanging between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. The
banner will cost $200, with a portion of the proceeds going to a veterans-related charitable organization. In addition to the banner that will hang outside, program participants will also receive a 4”x6” print of the banner, a digital version, and the chance to share your loved ones service story to an page on the Town of Babylon and Lindenhurst Kiwanis websites. “Here in the Town of Babylon, we always go the extra mile to honor our service men and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “This is a unique way to honor our veterans and add an extra element to our downtowns. Thank you to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis, our
Beautification Program and all others involved for their hard work on this project,” he added. The project first took off in the town after the mothers of two active duty service members, Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther, came to Supervisor Rich Schaffer with the idea. From there, town’s Beautification Program, led by Director Viscel Moore, was contacted by Ralph Somma of the Lindenhurst Kiwanis, who agreed to carry the village’s program out across the town. Every Friday afternoon, dozens, if not hundreds of boxes of food line the front sidewalk of Edmund W. Miles Middle School where they are distributed to local families. The program, coordinated by the Amityville Union Free School District’s Pupil Personnel Services department, ensures nutritious meals for children and adults in the community. The district provides individually bagged graband-go meals for children as part of its breakfast and lunch program. The meals meet federal nutrition guidelines and include bread, cereal, fruits and vegetables, milk and chocolate milk, juice and
snacks. Amityville partners with Island Harvest and Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The organizations have steadily delivered perishable and non-perishable goods to the school from fresh produce to pasta and rice. Island Harvest often provides USDA-certified pre-packaged food boxes that contain assorted fruits and vegetables, fresh dairy items, eggs, fully cooked and deli meats, and a gallon of milk. The food program also receives support from local service-oriented organizations, including the Amityville Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club and Woman’s Club, which have
donated non-perishable goods and gift cards. Park Avenue Grill provides families with hot meals. Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services Peter Paternostro said the meal program is a free service to the community with “no questions asked.” He said with the financial impacts facing families as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this program is extremely important. Distribution takes place from 3 to 4 p.m. in the school’s front driveway, with administrators, teachers, custodians, support staff and food service workers volunteering their time to sort food and load up cars.

The Ever Present Absence
When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with the loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support.
It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are still conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. But as we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here.” Acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives. Not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in that moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives.

During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. But, during special events such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. we are intensely aware of their absence to the print the entire event can be saddened because of our grief. Virginia Thomas was born on January 24, 1927 to Mason Doyle and Carrie DeLeRee. Her three older brothers; Irving, Victor and Edwin were happy to welcome to the family. After graduating from Amityville High School in January 1945 she worked for Nassau Suffolk Lumber in Amityville as a secretary. Virginia married Raymond Thomas on August 23, 1947. Virginia was very active as a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school, and then Virginia and Raymond enjoyed their roles of counselors for the Walther League working with the young adults. They attended many Couples Club events and she was a member of the Ladies Aide. Later, the couple served on the evangelism committee. Virginia and Raymond lived in an apartment above her parents at 70 Morris Street. They moved to Riverside Street and raised their children there, not even a mile away. She was fascinated with colonial living and enlisted her entire family to lecture and demonstrate to various groups. They churned butter, made brooms, spun wool all using the antiques they collected over the years. Virginia, along with her friend Darcey Krayer, were instrumental in the development of the Amityville Historical Society. Virginia and Raymond traveled to England while researching the family’s genealogy. Their favorite places were the Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. Her biggest passion was crafts of all kinds. She loved cake decorating, silk flower arranging, ribbon embroidery, photography, toll painting, weaving and spinning. Virginia also loved writing stories and poetry. Virginia is survived by her children;, David Thomas (Marlene), Diana Pecholcs (Martins), and Alan Barker (Debbi), twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and
Alexander G. Yaxis Alexander G. Yaxis, a resident of Amityville, LI., died November 4, 2020 at his home in Amityville. He was 102 years old. Mr. Yaxis was born in Lexington, Kentucky on February 21,1918 to George and Anastasia Yaxis. Alexander served, as a Lieutenant in the United States Air force, with distinction. He was employed by Elmhurst Dairy in Jamaica, New York as a chemist. Mr. Yaxis was predeceased by his wife
Violet in June 1998. Father Randolph Jon Geminder, rector, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, conducted a service at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 11th. Interment followed the next day in Greenfield Cemetery, Uniondale, LI. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

The family would like to thank her very loving care givers: Annabelle, Theresa and Hyacinth. These wonderful women brought Virginia a great deal of love, joy and laughter. Virginia lived a long wonderful life. If she had one last thing to say it would be this. But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33) A private interment was held in Amityville Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a future date at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Be Happy, Be Brave, Be Healthy Students in the Amityville Union Free School District are equipped with the tools to make good choices as Red Ribbon Week emphasized the consequences of substance use and abuse. Red Ribbon Week is a national drug-abuse awareness campaign held each year at the end of October that inspires students to make healthy
choices. This year’s theme was “Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free!” At Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, social worker Jessica Buzzerio visited third, fourth and fifth grade classrooms to talk about the dangers of alcohol, drugs, smoking and vaping. She also discussed peer pressure and shared tips on how to say “no.” Students
demonstrated these techniques in simulated peer-pressure situations. The week of Oct. 26-30 featured dress-up spirit days including wearing red, wearing pajamas to “wake up drug free,” teaming up against drugs with sports jerseys and saying “boo” to drugs with Halloween costumes. The school also held a poster contest and
students could either submit a hand-drawn poster or a digital creation using Google Slides. At Edmund W. Miles Middle School, Red Ribbon Week lessons were presented during advisory periods for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Teachers discussed the negative consequences of drug use and how the decisions they make as teenagers can affect the rest of their lives. Students signed drug-free pledges, which were hung on the “Bee Happy, Bee Brave, Bee Drug Free” bulletin board designed by art teacher Jennifer Dibble. Middle school social worker Beatriz Offitto said the mission of Red Ribbon
Week is to encourage children and families to live healthy, happy and drugfree lives. It also serves as a reminder that everyone is empowered to shape their communities through positivity, bravery and strength. To create even more awareness, teachers decorated their classroom doors for Red Ribbon Week with many fun themes. From “Let’s Taco ’bout drugs… Drugs are Nacho friend” to “Rockin’ a Drug Free Life,” teachers came up with many creative slogans and designs to impart an important message. Students were able to vote on their favorite doors.

The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon Rescheduled
The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon will be held on Friday, November 27th after being cancelled due to the initial outbreak of the Corona Virus. The scenic trail walk will be through the beautiful and picturesque Baiting Hollow Scout Camp located at 1774 Sound Avenue, Calverton, NY and will include a tour of the beautiful McMorris Lodge being built at the Camp. The McMorris Family, along with the Suffolk County Council of the Boy Scouts of America are hosting this Walkathon to raise the funds needed to complete the McMorris
Lodge, which is under construction at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in memory of Andrew Mc Morris. Andrew is the Boy Scout, who was killed by a drunk driver, while hiking the Greenbelt Trail with his Boy Scout Troop 161 in September 2018. Several other Scouts were severely injured as a result of this tragic crash. The lives of his family, friends, community and fellow scouters were forever changed by Andrew’s loss. All walkers will enjoy a complementary grab and go lunch at the conclusion of the Walkathon which is being donated by Applebee’s. North Fork Trolley will be providing complementary shuttle service for all
participants to and from the parking area for the event. New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Amid Pandemic
Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of
this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation of the way people donate blood has changed. The
convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”
