More than a dozen local veterans shared their stories with students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District during Take a Veteran to School Day on November 7th. The veterans came from all different branches of the military, having served as far back as World War II and as recently as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They talked about why they joined the military, their overseas experiences, the difficulties they faced being away from their families, and the pride they still feel today knowing they served their country. Copiague Middle School’s Home and Careers Club members are working hard to brighten the day of shelter puppies waiting for their adoptive families. Using recycled T-shirts that are cut into strips and braided, the students

are making tug toys for the dogs at the Attleboro Animal Shelter. With the help of Copiague Middle School technology teacher Stephen DiGiorgio, who drilled holes through the center of 18 tennis balls,

the students are testing out their toys to make sure they hold up to dog’s tugging. Copiague Middle School science teacher Jennifer Palazzo will deliver the tug toys to the shelter upon completion.

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

Only take antibiotics when a bacteria-, parasite- or fungus-based illness is identified. These illnesses may include

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

Students from Amityville Memorial High School spoke about the issues central to the 2016 presidential election during a series of mock debates. In the weeks leading up to the election, students from the Advanced Placement government classes became experts in Republican and Democratic ideals. They were each assigned to a candidate and researched that person’s stance on various issues such as foreign policy, immigration, health care and economics. Students then split into pairs and visited social studies classes throughout the day on November 4th. Each debate featured

opening statements, as well as questions from teachers and students, often leading to spirited back-and-forth dialogue. The debaters identified themselves only as Candidate A and Candidate B, so students would cast their votes in a mock election on November 7th solely based on the candidates’ ideals. Candidate A, Hillary Clinton, would go on to be the winner. Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School also hosted a mock election. The teachers taught their students about the electoral process and how to respectfully disagree with one another. It was a landslide victory for Clinton.

Miles Middle School volunteered their time. At Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, audience members sat at table representing different Latin American nations and noshed on chips and salsa as they were entertained and educated. Students portrayed famous Latin Americans such as Roberto Clemente, Oscar De La Hoya and Selena Gomez. They also showed flags from Spanishspeaking countries and shared facts about those nations. Following a musical performance, guests were treated to a buffet dinner featuring empanadas, rice,

beans, chicken, pork and more. “This was an opportunity for our students to celebrate their cultures and share information with their friends, family and neighbors,” said Park Avenue Principal Robyn Santiago. “It was all about the kids and bringing the school community together.”

The senior class at Amityville Memorial High School recently attended the annual Senior Awareness Day trip held at Amityville Beach. Special education teacher and WAC PAC coordinator Jason McGowan organized the event. The seniors enjoyed

a beautiful day in which they participated in icebreaking activities and family groups. Following lunch, students played basketball, Kan Jam, softball, soccer and other activities with teachers. The day concluded with group competitions including a mummy wrap

and tug of war. “I really had a great time,” said senior Brandon Gilpin. “The activities were fun. I bonded with my classmates and had a chance to hang out with a few of my teachers which was cool.”

Copiague’s Top Ten Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School has announced the top 10 students for the graduating Class of 2017. With a weighted GPA of 103.52, Tomasz Solecki has been named the valedictorian. Mikayla Angel has been named salutatorian with a weighted GPA of 103.39. Solecki is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Math Team. Throughout his time at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, he has been a member of DECA and the Tree Huggerz Club. Solecki participates in many community service

activities and is a volunteer at his church. He plans to major in economics but is still undecided on a college. Angel is also an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. Dominican Village of Amityville recently held its 10th annual Chinese Auction On October 7th. The event was a huge success raising over $30,000. Personal Touch Writing from the heart is a cause to celebrate at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District. Eighth-graders in Janine Katsigiorgis’ and Carolyn Mejia’s classes recently completed their memoirs, then marked that accomplishment with a publishing party on November 4th. The memoir writing unit is part of the new Writer’s Workshop that the

district has implemented through Columbia Teacher’s College. The writing process began with a brainstorming session as students shared small moments in their lives. As each student worked on their rough draft, they learned to establish a setting and dialogue. They then edited their stories on Chromebooks before creating their final products. At the publishing party,

students shared excerpts from their finished pieces before enjoying bagels and juice, and receiving a certificate of achievement.
