The Lost Holiday The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 11:00 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. FEDERAL GRANT - Congressman Pete King recently informed the Amityville Fire Department that it had received a federal grant from the Department of Homeland Security for $137,000. The grant will allow the Amityville Fire Department to increase the number of trained and certified firefighters capable of safely responding to emergencies in the Amityville community. Congressman King, who is Co-Chairman of the Congressional Fire Caucus, works closely with local Fire Departments and assists them in seeking to obtain federal Homeland Security grants.

At Northwest Elementary School, good character matters. Firstthrough third-grade students in the Amityville Union Free School District spent a week learning about the positive behavioral traits they should display at school and in all aspects of their lives. For Spirit Week, from October 17th to 21st, children were asked to wear a different color each day for the different pillars of character: yellow for respect, blue for trustworthiness, orange for fairness, green for responsibility and red for caring. The students learned to be tolerant of others, help people in need, consider the consequences of their actions, play by the rules and have the courage to do the right thing. In art, each class made a friendship flower. Art teacher Lydia Robinson had every child design a pedal. Using markers, crayons and pencils, they wrote their name and a friendly message, and made a drawing. The pedals were then arranged to form a flower and laminated. Each class will keep the poster for the rest of the year as a reminder of the spirit of collaboration. Ms. Robinson also read them two anti-bullying books, “Stick and Stone,” and “Playground Push-Around.”

English Teachers Honored Three teachers from the Amityville Union Free School District were recognized at the New York State English Council’s 66th annual conference from October 19th to 21st in Albany. The honorees, Kathryn Rosario, Janine Katsigiorgis and Reinaldo Latorre, are all teachers at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Mr. Latorre, the

middle school’s English Department chairman for the past two years and a ninth-grade ELA teacher, was one of four recipients of the NYSEC’s mini-grant, receiving $500. He plans to use the funds to purchase more books for classroom libraries to give students more access to literature. “Students want to read books that are engaging and interesting,” Mr.

Character Counts The six pillars of character were prominently on display throughout Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District as it hosted Character Counts Week from October 17th to 21st. The highlight of the week was a doordecorating contest. Each class was assigned a pillar of character - caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness - and had

to dress up the door to reflect that trait. Student Council members judged the finished doors and chose the winners. Throughout October, there has been a Character Counts weekly raffle. Students received tickets for performing good deeds and making good choices, and each week four names were drawn. During Character Counts Week, the prize was a pizza lunch with Principal Robyn Santiago. The students also created

a colorful paper chain in the lobby. Each child wrote their name on a link, then picked one of the six traits and wrote what that means to them. The links were connected to show the school’s unity. Sixth-grader Amaya Nelson said of all the traits, the most important one is respect. “You have to treat other students with respect and you have to be fair,” she said. “You have to include them, not exclude.”

But tires are one area of maintenance that often goes unchecked, even by the most diligent automobile owners. But many drivers do not give tires a passing thought until there is a problem, such as a flat or excessive wear. Also, some drivers think that all tires are the same, failing to realize that the kind of tires vehicles need depends on various factors. The Shanti Fund is a Long Island-based charitable organization that works closely with the district, and whose mission is to promote a culture of peace and nonviolence for children of the world.
