Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars. Veterans Day in October? For a short time, according to Military.com, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this

decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veterans Day to November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11.

Veterans around the world Many countries, including the United States, celebrate veterans on or near November 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also November 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day is also called Poppy Day, when people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty.

The Kiwanis Club Of Amityville New Administration
After several weeks of writing, editing and revising, eighth graders at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District celebrated the completion of their first major writing assignment of the year. Teacher Dawn Attanasio said the celebration was the culmination of much hard work by students in the memoir writing unit. Each student had to pick a meaningful moment in his or her life to write about. Many chose a memory
from a place they visited, while others shared an experience with a family member or friend. Students brainstormed different moments in their lives and wrote those down in their writers notebooks. From there, each young author picked one memory to develop into a longer piece. Ms. Attanasio shared memoirs she had written over the years as examples. At the celebration, a few students recited their pieces in front of the class. Then, they were able to go

Young Writers around the room, read each other’s memoirs and leave feedback on compliment pages. It closed out with a sharing circle, in which students discussed all that they learned about memoir writing. “Students were given the experience of being real authors in making their work public, having a real audience and being proud of their writing,” she said. “They all did an excellent job with their memoirs and there was some very sophisticated writing.”

VARSITY CLUB HELPS PAINT IT PINK - During breast cancer awareness month, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School varsity club organized its annual pink pumpkin fundraiser to raise money for breast cancer awareness in October. This year, Hicks Nursery of Westbury, Best Market and Stop & Shop of Amityville donated pumpkins to help with the cause. The varsity club members painted and decorated the pumpkins pink and added inspirational words and phrases. This year, the club YOUNG WRITERS - Edmund W. Miles Middle School English language arts teacher raised more than $200 to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Students celebrated Hispanic culture through song, dance and poetry at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District on Oct. 25. The annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration featured the talents of dozens of student performers. After Luna Caicedo recited the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish, choral students sang the national anthem, followed by the Gipsy Kings song “Bamboleo.” The orchestra performed “El Toro” and the band closed out the afternoon with “Hot Hot Hot.” Señora Calderon’s dance troupe performed a variety of Latin dances including Punta, Salsa and Zumba. Drama students presented a skit on the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez, and several students read poems. Teachers participated in a flag salute highlighting Spanish-speaking countries and territories including
