By: Jamie Lynn Ryan First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make

eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college

students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

This was because of the difficulty in using them to prepare a tooth for a metallic restoration. Now that we are using bonded resin fillings we find that the air-abrasion has some ideal applications. It functions by propelling a fine stream of air containing abrasive particles. This is directed in a very controlled and precise way. Because the instrument itself does not touch the tooth, it reduces heat, noise, vibration, and lessens the need for anesthetics. It is excellent for use where a bonded resin restoration will be used, where pit and fissure decay is involved, and where an existing restoration must receive a covering layer of new filling material. Orchestra, the Albany Symphony, Glimmerglass Opera, and Appalachian Spring with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Hansbrough has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra and The Nashville Symphony. Holding a strong interest in baroque performance practice, she plays baroque flute in solo, chamber and orchestral settings and is currently a member of Empire Baroque, based in Albany, NY. She has recorded on labels including Albany Records, Angel Records and Alabaster Records and released her solo CD “American Flute Music: Leaving the Twentieth Century.” A certified Yoga instructor Hansbrough presents Yoga for Musicians workshops. All festival participants will attend a master class on NYSSMA solos and play in an ensemble on their level. There will be a demonstration of the different flutes in the flute family by members of the Hofstra Flute Choir. There will be exhibits from music vendors. The festival concludes with a performance by all participants showcasing ensembles rehearsed earlier in the day. The grand finale is a performance of Bach’s “Meditation” performed by all of the flutists who participated in the festival. They encourage any

O’Connell Copaigue High School. This day dedicated to the flute offers many different opportunities to play and meet other flutists from the area. The LI Flute Festival is for flutists of all ages from students who have only played a year to professionals, teachers and amateur flute lovers. The guest artist this year will be Yvonne Chavez Hansbrough, Professor of Music at the College of Saint Rose, the director of the Saint Rose Camerata and principal flutist with the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra. She holds music degrees from New Mexico State University (BME) the University of Arizona (MM). She received her Doctorate in Flute Performance in 1991 from The Florida State University, where she was a recipient of a University Fellowship and graduate assistantship. Hansbrough has performed at many venues across the U.S. including Piccolo Spoleto Chamber Music Festival, The Boston Early Music Festival, Baroque Festival in Greenfield, NY, Troy Music Hall, Proctors Theater, several National Flute Association Conventions and WAMC Radio Linda Norris Auditorium. Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Town Clerk Carol Quirk and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to unveil a new stone monument at Tanner Park in Copiague to honor the first responders, organizations and volunteers who helped in recovery efforts following last year’s Superstorm Sandy. Supervisor Schaffer addressed the crowd and spoke of his appreciation for everyone who helped out in the storm’s aftermath. Also speaking to those in attendance were Kim Skillen of Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Jim Harrington of the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association and Inspector Gerard Gigante of the Suffolk County Police First Precinct, who discussed

their experiences following the storm. Tanner Park, where the monument is located, was one of the Town facilities heavily damaged by the storm. The monument consists of a bronze plaque that rests on a stone base and lists the numerous organizations that have lent their support to those who were affected by the storm over the past year. The plaque reads: “When the Town of Babylon was struck by Superstorm Sandy in the fall of 2012, many residents were exposed to dangerous storm conditions; some of whom were rescued from their homes. These brave men and women were the first to answer the call when their neighbors needed them the most. We thank them for their service and dedicate this plaque to them.”
