Flowers of Friendship As part of the school’s character education program, Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District held its Character Counts Spirit Week from October 19th23rd. Throughout the week, students were encouraged to wear a different color that represented a good character trait. Each day offered a new theme for students to show off their best Character Counts spirit

– “Golden rule Monday,” “True Blue Tuesday,” students wore orange for “Bully Free Wednesday,” green represented “Responsibility Thursday,” and on “Fabulous Friday” students wore red to kick off red ribbon week. Character Counts-themed lessons were incorporated into classroom instruction as well as in art, music and library specials. Students participated in activities that reinforce good behavior and bully

prevention. During art classes, teacher Lydia Robinson read the book “The Little Bully” by Beth Bracken. Following the story, students discussed ways to be a good friend. Each student received a flower petal to write his or her name, one character trait that represents a good friend and illustrate that trait. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s girls varsity field hockey, volleyball and soccer teams held separate fundraisers during select home games in the month of October. The girls varsity soccer team and head coach Nick Lorenzen, along with junior varsity coach Danielle Poletti, sponsored their annual Kicks for Cancer game in a 4-2 win

over Bay Shore on October 9th. Playing for a special cause this year, the funds were donated to Siearah Rodriguez, a Copiague high school senior who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. The varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams, along with coach John Sack, hosted a Dig Pink match against Smithtown East on October 14th. Dig Pink is a national event sponsored by the

Side-Out Foundation to educate the public about breast cancer and to help eradicate this illness. The teams collectively raise more than $400 for the foundation. Additionally, the field hockey team and their coach, Patricia Stein, raised funds during their game against North Babylon on October 19th. The team raised more than $70 through cupcake, snacks and T-shirts sales.

In an effort to take proactive steps to stop and prevent bullying, the Amityville Union Free School District adopted the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. The OBPP is a coordinated effort by faculty and administrators throughout the district to supervise and intervene when any bullying occurs. As part of the curriculum, students participate in weekly class meetings to learn about the effects of bullying, what they can do about it, and how they can work with adults at school to put a stop to bullying, even as bystanders. This program is designed to

improve peer relations, make schools safer, and more positive places for students to learn and develop. According to the program’s website violencepreventionworks. org, the OBPP is the only evidence-based nationally recognized program credited with over 35 years of research. OBPP has been implemented in more than 6,000 schools nationwide and was classified as a model program by the Blueprints for Violence Prevention, a project of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado. “Implementing

the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a long-term commitment towards improving the culture and climate of the Amityville Union Free School District for all students and staff,” said Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services Peter Paternostro, At the October Board of Education meeting, students from Edmund W. Miles Middle School presented their Students United for Safe Schools bullying awareness video. Following the presentation, students were presented with a certificate for playing an active role in bully prevention.

College Opportunities The guidance department at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School sponsored a “Road to College” college fair on October 21st to educate students and their parents on the various academic and career opportunities after high school. In an effort to help student-athletes and their parents prepare for the event, the athletic department and booster club held a “College

Admissions for the Student Athlete” workshop on October 20th. During the workshop, students heard from guest presenter Andy Herman, a former Nassau County Athletic Director and professor in the Graduate School of Education program at Hofstra University. Additionally, the workshop offered student-athletes, parents, coaches, counselors and administrators extensive

information about the college acceptance process and a pro-active approach to athletic recruiting. At the college fair, a variety of colleges, universities and trade schools were present to provide students with further insight of their options after graduation. Many students attended the college fair to gather more information on prospective schools and speak with representatives.

BUILDERS CLUB - The Builders Club at Copiague Middle School is doing another awesome job under the direction of Maria Ostrosky. This year, they are collecting for Unicef to insure that all pregnant women in other countries receive a tetanus shot to prevent infant death. The club participated in the recent Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach, and are collecting socks for the homeless and old towels and blankets for veterinary hospitals. Amity Homecoming Warrior pride filled the community as the Amityville Union Free School District held its annual homecoming parade and game on October 24th. Community members, beaming in red and black, filled the bleachers at Lou Howard Field in support of the Amityville Warriors varsity football team as they took on the East Islip Redmen. To kick off the celebration, the community was treated to a parade of colorful class floats and vibrant banners

representing school clubs, music programs and sport teams. Members of the Board of Education, district administrators and the high school marching band helped lead the parade through the town and onto the field. Designed around the theme of the ’90s, the seniors’ float represented the Nickelodeon show “All That,” the juniors’ depicted “Saved by the Bell,” the sophomores’ float displayed “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” and the freshmen, Nintendo’s “Mario Kart.” Dressed in

character, members of the drama club paraded aside their float, which portrayed the musical “Hairspray.” At 3 p.m., the Warriors took on East Islip, but despite their best efforts, Amityville fell short of a homecoming victory. During halftime, members of the homecoming court were announced and homecoming king Elijah Duff and queen Zah-Niyah Jerrick were crowned. The crowd was also treated to performances by the high school cheerleading team and marching band.

Hispanic Heritage Kindergarten students at Northeast School in the Amityville Union Free School District celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a musical performance for family and friends on October 15th. In the weeks leading up to the celebration, teachers worked with students to research and create a poster about a famous Hispanic celebrity. In an

effort to promote family participation, students and parents were asked to create a poster that represents their family heritage. These posters were put on display in the gymnasium for the performance and hung throughout the school building. During the performance, kindergartners sang “Mi Cuerpo Hace Música” and

“Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes,” in Spanish and English. While showcasing their colorful poster, teachers and students from each class shared information about the Hispanic celebrity the class researched. To conclude the event, students performed a choreographed dance to the song “Danza Kuduro” by Don Omar.
