As part of Start with Hello week during the end of September at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District, fifth graders learned about Peace Day by turning the lesson into a STEM and social emotional activity. The classes began by reading “Wangari’s Tree of Peace” by Jeanette Winter. Students were introduced to Wangari Maathai and all she has done for her village. Starting with the planting of one “peace” tree, Wangari created the Green Belt Movement in Africa. The students talked about the symbolism of the tree in literature. They were then challenged to work with a partner to create their own peace tree out of 15 pipe cleaners. Students were asked to plan, question their plan, create their plan and reﬂect on it.

parents sat through a short presentation about the benefits of the 1:1 technology program, as well as computer care, student responsibility and digital citizenship. Each student then left with a Chromebook, a charger and a set of earbuds. Amityville Memorial High School Principal Edward Plaia said that gone are the days of teachers writing notes on a chalkboard, and students copying them down in their notebooks. Schools must evolve to reﬂect the ever-changing world, he explained, to ensure that students are active participants in the educational process. “The research is very clear,” Mr. Plaia said. “Students are engaged when they’re using technology. That’s the world we live, so we have to adapt to it, and that’s why we are rolling out the Chromebooks.”

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer. 5. Manage moisture. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers. 6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.

Mrs. Renee E. Lang, a resident of Amityville, LI., died October 16, 2019 at good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip, LI. She was 92 years old. Mrs. Lang was born in Brooklyn, New York to Frederick and Margaret (Windel) Schmidt. In addition to caring for her family Renee was employed by Sun Line Sunroof in Lindenhurst, LI. as a bookkeeper. Renee’s husband of 42 years, Charles, preceded her in death in April 1990. Survivors include her children Charles F. (Linda), Dennis J. (Kathleen), Paul W. (Susan), Jeffrey J. (Laura) and Matthew R. (Debra); her grandchildren Jonathan, Philip, Jessica Schiele (Doug), Dennis, Erica Buckley (Bryan), Chel Sea, Bridget and Zachary; her great grandchildren Paige

Schiele, Grace Schiele, Kaylee Buckley, Erin Buckley, Bryan Buckley and Aiden Buckley. Mrs. Lang’s son Dennis shared word of Comfort at the funeral home on Sunday evening at 8:00 PM. Interment

followed the following day in Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults. Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy. Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-or-treaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage. Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone. 1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as

It’s not every day that high school students are out coloring the sidewalks with chalk, but at Amityville Memorial High School on Sept. 13, it helped bring history alive. Students from the Advanced Placement European History participated in a handson Renaissance gallery art activity by recreating several famous works. Juniors and seniors have been studying the Renaissance time period, which spanned from the early 14th to the early 17th century. Students delved into the characteristics of both Italian and Northern Renaissance art by forming groups and conducting research on particular artists, the artwork they

Stepping In The Shoes Of Renaissance Artists created and the techniques they used. After explaining the significance of each piece of artwork, students went outside to recreate it. Two groups focused on Leonardo Da Vinci, with one replicating “The Last Supper” and another drawing the “Mona Lisa.” A third group focused on the Northern Renaissance and depicted Jan van Eyck’s “The Arnolfini Portrait.” by Jan van Eyck. Teacher Matthew Tomasi said this is the third year students from the AP European History class have completed this project and they enjoy the experience of recreating famous artwork from centuries ago.

Grant Secured For Amityville Police Department New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (D-Wheatley Heights) recently secured a capital grant for the Amityville Village Police Department in the amount of $133K. The grant has allowed the Department to purchase three new stateof-the-art police vehicles. Assemblywoman JeanPierre joined Amityville Village Mayor Dennis Siry, members of the Amityville

Village Board of Trustees and members of the Amityville Police Department for an official check presentation at Amityville Village Hall. “Our law enforcement officers work diligently to serve and protect our communities, and these new vehicles will enhance the ability of our Amityville police officers to continue that great work,” said JeanPierre. “I wish to extend a big thank

you to Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre for her hard work and dedication to law enforcement with the procurement of this grant for the purchase of three fully-equipped 2019 Ford Interceptor police cars,” said Amityville Village Police Chief Glenn C. Slack. “These police cares will save the Village of Amityville tax dollars that can go to other much-needed improvements to the Village.”
