Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature. Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with

record snowfall yet again. Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end. Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’. In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted

house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day. For now, anyway. And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax. There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list. It’s not a race. SPECIAL LESSON - Mrs. O’hara’s Pre-K Class at Grace Day School’s Amityville Campus got a special visit from Amityville Fire Fighters this week. The bravest spent the day with the youngsters teaching the basics of fire safety. The students got a first-hand look all around the fire truck and and Firefighter Tom demonstrated a rescue in full garb, including air tank. Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society at Jones Beach. To promote their fundraiser, the club created a large ribbon and displayed it in the hallway. For each donation received, they colored a portion of the ribbon pink. Joining in on the fundraising efforts, staff members at Wiley participated in Stomp Out Cancer on October 17th. With a $5 donation, staff could wear sneakers to bring awareness to the cause. The money raised was donated to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Conciencia Latina club at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School sponsored a community soccer game on October 5th. “In particular, the tournament serves to highlight the Central American cultures of our

students,” said Advisor Yoleidys Swerdloff. Hispanic Heritage month begins on Sept. 15 and commemorates the independence days of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico. “Since most students native to Central America play soccer, the students

decided last year it would be a great way to remember their celebrations back home,” Swerdloff added. The tournament also helped raise funds for a children’s foundation working in Central America, where the group sponsors a three-year-old girl living in Honduras.

Playing For Pink To commemorate October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the girls varsity field hockey and soccer teams at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held separate fundraisers. During their October 14th 3-2 win against North Babylon, the field hockey team, along with coach
