First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people
have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.
In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its annual Hispanic Heritage event on October 13th. During the evening, students and their family enjoyed music, dancing, artwork and food that celebrate the Hispanic culture. To kick off the event, Principal Vincent Todisco offered words of welcome and expressed the pride he possesses for his heritage.

Bond Forum Set Residents of the Copiague School District will have an opportunity to vote on a capital project bond referendum on Monday, November 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Great Neck Road Elementary School. All community residents are invited to attend an
informative bond forum on Wednesday, October 28th, starting at 7 p.m. in the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School cafeteria. After listening to the community’s comments and concerns about the conditions of the district’s schools and the need to
minimize the cost of a bond to the community, the Board of Education and administration carefully prioritized the scope of work and implemented additional funding options not previously available before finalizing the work included in the proposed bond referendum. The
district will also receive 75.2 percent in New York State Building Aid, which will further reduce the cost to taxpayers. It was decided that two propositions be established in order to give the community a greater voice in deciding the future of the Copiague School
District. If both Proposition #1 and Proposition #2 are approved the cost to the average household will be approximately 49¢ per day or $178.19 per year. Taxpayers will spend approximately $16.5 million for more than $58 million worth of work districtwide.

Continued From 11 Designed around the theme of “Once Upon a Time an Eagle’s Story,” the seniors’ float represented Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” the juniors depicted Disney World, the sophomores’ float displayed “Little Red Riding Hood” and the freshmen, “Scooby-Doo.” Prior to the homecoming
football game, attendees enjoyed the Booster Clubsponsored Fair, which included student and PTA-run booths, music for dancing, games and food. At 2 p.m., the Copiague high school varsity football team took on North Babylon and despite their best efforts, the Copiague Eagles fell short of a homecoming victory. During halftime,
members of the homecoming court were announced and the crowd enjoyed performances by the marching band, cheerleaders and lady steppers. The day’s festivities concluded with the annual celebration of alumni at the Hall of Achievement induction ceremony.

In addition to Mr. Sales recognition remarks, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon shared a brief history of the Hall of Achievement and explained its purpose. “In honoring successful past graduates of Copiague High School, the Hall of Achievement’s primary purpose is to introduce these alumni as positive and motivating role models to our entire school community, and then keep those role models
connected in a variety of ways to our schools and our students,” said Dr. Bannon. “By the nature of their accomplishments and service, inductees to the Hall of Achievement inspire our students to reach high goals.” This year’s honorees included Ryan J. W. Kuhn, Class of 2003; Ofrona A. Reid, Jr., M.D., Class of 1989; and Scott C. Sattler, Class of 1983. And when you lie in bed at night the day’s chores put to flight. God and I are closest to you…in the middle of the night. When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years. Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain. I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. If I were to tell you, you wouldn’t understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over. I’m closer to you now, than I ever was before. There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb; But together we can do it by taking one day at a time. Staying Smart About Safety In recognition of fire safety awareness month, students at Deauville Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West elementary schools in the Copiague School District participated in a fire safety program led by members of the Copiague Fire Department on October 14th. During the presentation, Copiague Fire Department Assistant Chief Dominick Nuzzi reminded students
about ways to be prepared and alert if they are caught in a fire. The students were also informed to select a safe family meeting spot if they are in a situation where their house is on fire and to immediately call 911 once they are safely away from the fire. In addition, students witnessed two firefighters quickly put on the protective gear they wear to enter a burning building. The suited up
firefighters demonstrated how in some situations they crawl on their hands and knees to navigate through a structure fire. To conclude the program, students were afforded the opportunity to ask the firefighters questions about fire safety and their gear.
