The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two

Volunteers will be sorting non-perishable food items, along with other items. Masks are required and volunteers who will attend are encouraged to bring a donation of non-perishable food (canned or boxed goods) with them to this Volunteer Day. Oktoberfest Celebrations The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate.com, brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so many brewers

would cease brewing beer in spring and begin again in the fall when temperatures dropped. As a result, the beers available for Oktoberfest celebrations were the Märzen style of beer, or those brewed in the month of March, shortly before brewing ceased for the season. These Märzen beers were kept in cold storage throughout the spring and summer or brewed at a higher gravity so they

would keep and be available for consumption during Oktoberfest celebrations. Such brewing restrictions were no longer necessary after refrigeration became commonplace and made it possible to brew beer year-round, but there’s still a strong chance that steins being hoisted during this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations will be filled with Märzen-style beers.

Amityville Union Free School District’s BOE President Appointed To The Board Of Directors Of REFIT

The Amityville Union Free School District is excited to announce that Board of Education President Dr. Terry Fulton has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the public schools’ financial advocacy organization, Reform Educational Financing Inequalities Today (REFIT). The organization is focused on engaging elected officials to ensure school districts receive their fair and equitable share of financial aid from New York State consistently and predictably. Dr. Fulton has lived in the Amityville School District for more than 40 years and has served on the Board of Education for the District since 2013. He holds a doctorate in Theology and is the Vice President of the Caucus for Black School Board Members. Dr. Fulton is also Vice President of the Central Long Island branch of the National Association for The Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Dr. Fulton, himself, is a graduate of Amityville schools in addition to two of his sons. “Dr. Fulton’s appointment to the Board of Directors is wonderful news for our District,” said Dr. Edward Fale, Superintendent of Schools of Amityville Union Free School District. “It’s exciting to have an Amityville community member like Dr. Fulton with his extensive background represent us on the REFIT Board to ensure

TERRY FULTON our District’s needs are being heard and addressed properly.” Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York State has reached an agreement to fully fund New York school districts over the next three years through the foundation aid initiative, a program that schools heavily rely on to be able to provide students with resources so they can excel academically and outside of the classroom. While Dr. Fulton has voiced his appreciation for the Governor’s commitment to fully fund the foundation aid formula, he also points out that fully funding the formula now does not make up for the almost $100 million in state aid the District has not received since the 2007-2008 school year, the period when the foundation aid formula was established but never fully implemented. That $100 million, Dr. Fulton

notes, could have been used to provide improved and expanded academic resources to Amityville students as well as provide some level of tax relief to the taxpayers of the District. Dr. Fulton added, “it is great that the Governor has made this three year commitment, but that is all it is. What we need is a long-term commitment so that whatever advances we make in these next three years are not undone because the financial resources are pulled out from under us again.” In discussing his appointment to REFIT, Dr. Fulton stated, “I am honored and privileged to be chosen to sit on the Board of Directors and bring a fresh perspective. The fight for me, as a person of color, is seeing the elimination of the socio-economic and racial inequity that has been part of the foundation aid legacy for far too long. We have a responsibility to every student who attends our schools to provide them with the best opportunities and set them up for success in the workforce or to pursue further education. While we are thrilled about the Governor’s three-year commitment, the fight does not stop there. This is the time to make sure that the funding will be consistent and be available every year after that.”

Mrs. Anne Booth, a resident of Amityville, LI., died September 27th at her home. She was 93 years old. Mrs. booth was born on November 15, 1927 in Copiague, LI to Luigi and Rose (Fucci) Forgione. She dedicated her life to the care of her husband and family. Mrs. Booth was predeceased by her husband Howard in November 1989. Survivors include her children Douglas (Jean), Glenn (Linda), Mark (Laura) and Greg (Germaine); her grandchildren, Jessica Booth McKeon 9Mark), Joseph Booth (Ashley), and Olivia Booth; her great granddaughter Sophia McKeon and many nieces and nephews. Deacon Par Labella conducted the service at the funeral home, followed by interment in Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

The Complicated Connection Between Black Cats, Witches And Halloween Come October, it’s hard to miss the many indelible images associated with Halloween. Homeowners may decorate their home exteriors with scarecrows, inflatable ghouls and goblins, and jack-o’-lanterns. Local businesses also may get in on the fun, offering “spooktacular” sales and decorating their storefronts with images of vampires, witches and other symbols of Halloween. Black cats have

become synonymous with Halloween decor, but few may know how this association came to be. According to History. com, the notion of black cats as bad omens can be traced to the Middle Ages. Back then, people believed witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats. The perception of black cats as something more than mere felines may even pre-date the Middle Ages. For example, in Norse

mythology, Freyja, a goddess of, among other things, a type of Late Scandinavian Iron Age magic known as “Seior,” was believed to have ridden a chariot pulled by two cats. That connection to sorcery could explain the link between black cats and witches that continues to be made today. Despite the lengthy history suggesting black cats are bad omens, it’s not all bad for these dark-colored felines. One researcher at the

Carnegie Museum of Natural History found that Welsh folklore depicted black cats as harbingers of good luck, and even noted their ability to predict the weather. Black cats are one of many symbols of Halloween. And much like jack-o’-lanterns and trick-or-treating, the story of how black cats came to be associated with Halloween is interesting and thoughtprovoking.
