3D Mammography is the newest advanced technology in Women’s Health Three Dimensional (3D) mammography, also called Breast Tomosynthesis, is the newest technology in the ﬁght against breast cancer that allows radiologists to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. 3D mammography uses high-powered computing to convert digital mammography breast images into a stack of thin slices.

Standard Digital Mammography provides only a two dimensional (2D) images of the breast. The breast is three dimensional, containing structures such as blood vessels, milk ducts, fat and ligaments. On a two dimensional (2D) mammogram, these structures overlap which can lead to small cancers going undiagnosed, or can cause normal tissue to appear abnormal and lead to unnecessary “call backs”.

One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

A 3D mammography exam is similar to a traditional mammogram. The technologist positions the patient, compresses the breast under a paddle and takes images from different angles. During the 3D mammography part of the exam, the machine sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in just seconds. The radiologists can view the breast tissue in one millimeter layers. The doctors at Suffolk Imaging have installed the most updated Hologic 3D mammography systems at all of their locations (Lake Grove, Medford and Lindenhurst). Interventional 3D stereotactic breast biopsy services are now available in both the Lake Grove and the Lindenhurst locations. All three imaging centers are the ﬁrst in New York to provide the only FDA approved 3D mammography dose reduction software (Hologic C-View). With this new software technology, 3D mammography is equivalent to 2D digital mammography in dose. All these technologies are being offered to our patients at no additional out of pocket charge. The Amityville community was out in full force for Homecoming 2013. Following a spirited pep rally celebration for students and staff held in the Amityville Memorial High School gymnasium on Thursday, October 3rd, alumnus athletes, coaches and athletic contributors were honored during the AMHS Sports Hall of Fame Induction ceremony on Friday, October 4th. Saturday, October 5th, AMHS cheerleaders, AMHS marching band members, Board of Education members, school staff, and students from various Amityville schools, along with parents, politicians and other dignitaries and supportive community members marched in the annual Homecoming Day Parade down Broadway through the heart of the Village of Amityville. The Warriors routed the visiting Harborfields High School Tornadoes by a score of 24-7. Amityville’s Sean Walters rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown, including an impressive 22-yard, tackle-breaking score. Sean also intercepted a pass, running it back to the end zone for an early 14-0 early, setting the tone for a triumphant day. Cam Grady added 101 yards rushing for Amityville, as the Warrior defense complemented this offensive output with an equally dominant performance. The warriors evened their record at 2-2. Kaashief Morgan and Brianna Taylor were named 2013 Amityville Homecoming King and Queen, respectively. The marching band delivered an outstanding tribute to the rock band “Journey,” while the varsity cheerleaders and senior dancers put on entertaining performances of their own.

The Amityville Sports Hall of Fame inducted members of the 2013 class on Friday, October 4th during its annual dinner and celebration held in the Amityville Memorial High School gymnasium. During the dinner, each inductee was presented with a plaque, an Amityville jacket, and a warm tribute of words delivered by a close friend or family member. Living and present inductees were also invited onto the football field for a celebration prior to the Amityville Warriors Homecoming Varsity Football game vs. Harborfields. The AMHS Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors is comprised of Reynolds Hawkins (Chairman), Jessica Bernius (Secretary), Jerry Pollack (Treasurer), Claude Byer, and Bruce Pescitelli. Mr. Pescitelli served as the Master of Ceremonies for the induction dinner. The Board would like to thank all of the Hall’s supporters for their help since the endeavor was launched. Suffolk County Legislator DuWayne Gregory was also on hand to commend the directors for their work in recognizing Amityville’s great athletes. During his acceptance speech, 2013 inductee and Amityville athletic contributor Brian Fowler nominated Mr. Hawkins for future induction. Mr. Pollack, who has coached 120 seasons of Amityville athletics throughout his career, joined Mr. Fowler as a 2013 inductee. Mr. Byer, a former girls basketball coach at AMHS, was inducted as a member of the inaugural class in 2011. He also gave the introduction speech for 2013 inductee Teakyta Barnes, one of his former athletes. The Board of Directors continues to sell bricks for a “Memory Walk” near the entrance to the AMHS track, to honor athletes, musicians, artists and

Remember when you were younger and in school and the teacher made you answer the questions? Who? What? Where? When? How? And WHY? But when someone we love discovers they have cancer, dies suddenly, or is killed in an accident, we never really get the answer to the question WHY? Of course, we can answer the question Who?
