Runaway Success Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, hosted its “Walk, Run & Ride for Autism,” on October 12th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.

Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming

over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

The day kicked off with the 5K Fun Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. For the third year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. Also, another new feature was a live performance by students enrolled in the All Music’s Rock-nRoll University, including numerous individuals with disabilities receiving services from DDI. The day was capped off with a festival in the park

complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This year’s event Grand Marshals were seven extraordinary people who for the second year in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000 from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Ellen McBurney, Peter Barker, Marita Rausch and Liam Kenny have proved to be worthy honorees. The Department of Child Study at St. Joseph’s College (SJC), in conjunction with Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), will host the conference, “Educating All: Addressing Issues and Overcoming Challenges” on Friday, November 7th from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on its Long Island Campus located in Patchogue, New York. The keynote speaker for this year’s conference is John Elder Robison, author and advocate. Robison, who has autism spectrum disorder, is a Neurodiversity Scholar at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is a bestselling author of Look Me in the Eye, Be Different and Raising Cubby, which are the most popular books on living with autism spectrum disorders and will be available for purchase at the event. Robison will also teach a workshop at the conference. He has been interviewed on CBS News, The Today Show and NPR. “This year’s conference will offer a variety of workshops on best practices and resources for educators and parents,” said S. Fourth-graders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, in the Amityville School District, took part in a two-session multimedia workshop designed to promote empathy and build social skills and assertiveness when dealing with classmates and conflict resolution. Child Abuse Prevention Services, a nonprofit organization, presented

the program on Oct. 6 and 7 in recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month. During the lessons, CAPS representatives and teachers engaged the students in discussions and stories aimed at teaching kids to steer clear of bullying. A handout titled “Am I A Good Friend/ Where Does Bullying Hurt” was provided to teachers prior to the workshops. The presenters used the

classroom Smart Boards and played an anti-bullying DVD for the fourth-grade classes. National Bullying Prevention Month began in 2006 as a way to raise awareness of the corrosive influence bullying can have on a school community. According to a 2011 Harvard School of Health Study, schools that have anti-bullying programs reduce bullying by 50 percent.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Pastor Kirton has been a missionary to the Hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast and Haiti on four occasions since the earthquake of 2010. Pastor Kirton also established the Safe Harbor Mentoring Program in 2003, an aftercare program for those making their transition

from incarceration to mainstream society. The Circle of Love Ministry Worldwide also provides pantry services to some 100 families monthly, and an annual Thanksgiving meal to some 800 on that holiday. Nyack College was established in 1882 by Dr. A.B. Simpson, a former pastor, and distinguishes itself as the only school of higher learning that has given birth to a religious denomination.
