Save the Great South Bay, a local 501(c)3 environmental nonprofit, recently teamed up with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control installing a unique Bandalong Bandit Litter Trap along the Carll’s River to passively capture floating litter and debris before it flows into the Bay. The litter trap was donated by Gerogia-based Stormwater Systems after outreach by organization member Walt Meshenberg. The trap passively collects floatables 24/7/365 using only the natural current. It also features a patented tidal gate which prevents trash from exiting the trap without netting or fencing making it safe for all aquatic wildlife. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! Oktoberfest Celebrations The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate. com, brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so many brewers would cease

brewing beer in spring and begin again in the fall when temperatures dropped. As a result, the beers available for Oktoberfest celebrations were the Märzen style of beer, or those brewed in the month of March, shortly before brewing ceased for the season. These Märzen beers were kept in cold storage throughout the spring and summer or brewed at a higher gravity so they would keep and be

available for consumption during Oktoberfest celebrations. Such brewing restrictions were no longer necessary after refrigeration became commonplace and made it possible to brew beer year-round, but there’s still a strong chance that steins being hoisted during this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations will be filled with Märzen-style beers.

External Diploma Program HELPSY RECOGNIZES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH - HELPSY, the largest clothing collector in the northeast, is planning to donate $0.02 per pound of clothing collected during new clothing drives scheduled in October 2021. The donation will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and is being made to honor survivors, those still suffering and those lost to breast cancer. This donation is in addition to any funds raised by host organizations to benefit the cause of their choice.
