Homecoming Celebration

Fourteen local sports legends were inducted into Amityville Memorial High School’s Sports Hall of Fame during an evening ceremony on October 7th. The inductees included coaches, athletes and others who contributed to the district’s sports program. Melvin Miller received the Lifetime Achievement Award after having coached middle school and junior varsity sports in the district for 38 years, including volleyball, basketball, track, softball and football. He also ran sports camps and clinics in the community. Jon Shebar was honored for coaching dominant and respected handball teams from 1981-1987. Kevin White, the director

There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Hispanic Heritage Fanfare

The auditorium at Amityville Memorial High School was full of energy on September 15th, as the school kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with flair. The entire student body gathered to celebrate Spanish culture through song, dance and video presentations. The Hispanic Heritage Club performed a flag dance, paying tribute to the many nations with significant Latino populations. A video featured famous Hispanics in history, including politicians, scientists and

entertainers. Drawing the biggest ovation from students was a performance by singer Raffi, who highlighted different types of Spanish music such as salsa and tango, while accompanied by student dancers. For his last of five songs, he invited all students and teachers up front to dance along. The program was organized by the Hispanic Heritage Club under the direction of guidance counselor Maria LeonPiñeros and Spanish teacher Elisa Castro. They said the goal was

to celebrate an energetic culture with a dynamic and informative assembly. Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th through October 15th, will be celebrated during assembly programs at other schools throughout the Amityville Union Free School District. At the high school, there will also be class discussions about different Hispanics who have made significant contributions in the United States.

Simulated Lesson Driver’s education students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School in the Copiague School District had a hands-on lesson in the dangers of drinking and driving thanks to a special visit from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office on October 5th. As part of the STOPPED community program, students participated in an activity where they drove a pedal car through a cone maze while wearing

googles that impair their vision and balance as if under the influence of alcohol. After the simulated driving portion, students then had to wear the googles and walk through the maze with a partner, trying to avoid the cones and get home safely. Thirty-six juniors and seniors are currently participating in the district’s driver’s education program. Driver’s education instructor Karen Perrone and Deputy

Thomas Indence have been working together to present the program to Copiague students for the last five years. “Any accident involving alcohol is preventable,” Perrone said. “This program brings the scary truth of drinking and driving up close to students in a safe way. If one student leaves a little smarter, it’s worth it. If they share the message with friends and they get it, even better!”

Warrior Pride the homecoming court. After enjoying hamburgers and hot dogs served up by the senior class, fans settled into their seats to watch the Warriors take on the West Babylon Eagles. Players, wearing pink socks for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, stormed onto the field through a “Let’s Go Warriors” banner held up by the cheerleaders. With a 35-32

score, Amityville earned its first win of the season. The halftime show featured performances by the marching band and cheerleaders. Members inducted into the Amityville Sports Hall of Fame the night before were honored on the field. Seniors Christian Bethea and Meybel Orellano were crowned the homecoming king and queen.

October is breast cancer awareness month and Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District has joined together in the fight throughout the month. Kicking off their fundraising effort on October 5th, families were
