Statewide Recognition Two students from the Amityville Union Free School District had their artwork selected for display at a statewide exhibit. Amityville Memorial High School sophomores Maksymilian Kiec and Kevin Zelaya had pieces chosen for the student art exhibit at the New York State School Boards Association conference in Lake Placid on October 12th and 13th. The students completed

these projects when they were ninth-graders at Edmund W. Miles Middle School, under the direction of art teacher Nicole Scoca. Kevin created an Egyptianinspired sneaker design using colored pencils in his art appreciation class. Maksymilian’s pen and ink piece of a Mexican sugar skull was made for Hispanic Heritage Month in his studio in art class. The exhibit was cosponsored by NYSSBA and

the New York State Art Teachers Association and highlights achievement in the visual arts. Work displayed demonstrates a high level of student ability using different mediums and techniques. “Kevin and Maksymilian deﬁnitely created standout pieces,” Ms. Scoca said. “They’re both very creative, have their own vision and have a very strong skill set.”

One Act at a Time The students, staff and administrators at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School are working to start a chain reaction of kindness in their school, local community and beyond, thanks to a presentation on October 11th. After two hourlong assemblies presented by Rachel’s Challenge, the school is committed to performing acts of kindness and compassion. Based on the life philosophy of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, the challenge gives students an opportunity to see just how far a little kindness will go. Students signed a banner to pledge their commitment to the challenge. “Students learned the valuable lesson of how going out of your way to help someone else could be life changing,” said Jonathan Cutolo, assistant principal at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. “Rachel’s story provided examples of how she changed people’s life with a simple hello or a kind remark and its message has reached across the globe.” In addition to the two assemblies, more than 100 Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students and 20 staff members participated in a training session to help spread Rachel’s Challenge. Students worked in groups to brainstorm ways to promote kindness and reduce/eliminate the negative use of social media by other students. They also created goals/ initiatives to implement throughout the school year. More than 150 students and their families attended an evening presentation at the high school. Parents were able to see portions of the students’ presentation from the morning and learn how the program can spread positive change.

The Amityville Board of Education continued to hear updates on the progress made during the first year of the five-year Strategic Plan as directors and department heads spoke at the October 4th meeting. Last month, the five principals provided building-level progress reports. The October meeting featured reports from Administrator for Pupil Personnel Services Peter Paternostro, Director of Fine Arts Dr. Frances Fernandez, Director of ENL and World Languages Mary Stephens, and Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Health Evan Farkas. Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulﬁlled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would ﬂourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.
