The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual e v e n t (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. You can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), and Bake Team Members (to donate baked

goods to sell at some of the events). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Students from the Latino Club, advised by world language teacher Elisa Castro, shared messages of peace. The Warrior Awareness Club, commonly known as the WAC PAC, had its annual peace rock ceremony. Adviser Jason McGowan said it is a “pay it forward” initiative, in which the painted rocks are continually passed along. Several students presented peace rocks to others who

have inspired them, including friends and teachers. Students formed a human peace sign on the front lawn of the school and created an art installation by putting their pinwheels in the ground, also in the shape of a peace sign. Three students were recognized for their pinwheel designs: Estephany Barrera, most colorful; Serraia Goodman, most creative; and Kevin Zelaya, most meaningful. National Art Honor Society members said the pinwheels placed in front of the school that morning would be among several million spinning around the world in the promotion of peace.

Copiague Kiwanis Car Show It was a beautiful sunny day and the cars were lined up by and ready to go. The Kiwanis Club of Copiague had a wonderful successful car show on Sept. 8th. The Kiwanians were there collecting money, handing out bracelets, selling baskets, all to beneﬁt the children. Scouts did a great job cooking and handling all the parking. The Key

Club were there to help and everyone went home happy and yes, tired. Thank you to all the drivers and all the patrons who made this such a great day We are very grateful to all who helped made this year’s Kiwanis Car Show such a huge success. Middle school Principal Earl Mitchell explained that Mr. Halligan has taken a painful and tragic experience and turned it into a learning experience for others. On the 16th anniversary of a day that changed his life, John Halligan told students in the Amityville Union Free School District a powerful story about his son, Ryan, who was bullied in school and took his own life. He spoke to sixth graders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School and seventh, eighth and ninth graders at Edmund W. Miles Middle School on Oct. 7. “Ryan’s Story,” which has been presented at more than 2,000 schools across the country including the middle school three years ago, began with Mr. Halligan introducing students to Ryan through photos and videos. He then went on to tell the story of how Ryan was bullied in his Vermont middle school and the tragic consequences that resulted. Ryan was 13 when he died. Within a year, Mr. Halligan’s efforts resulted in a Vermont law establishing bullying prevention programs in schools. Many states, including New York, have followed suit. His presentation had
