The smell of fall is in the air and Halloween is right around the corner, leaving thrill-seekers tingling in anticipation for the 27th annual Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk, hosted by the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws. Visitors will be chilled to the bones with this horrifying event, as they encounter surprises around every corner. This year’s Spooky Walk is sponsored by Capitol One Bank and will take place on October 16th-17th and 23rd-24th at Camp Pa-QuaTuck from 7 to 9 p.m. The entire Spooky Walk trail takes 45 minutes to complete, making it the longest-lasting haunted walk on Long Island. This year’s theme features pirates and a haunted mansion. The trails takes guests through four buildings around the campgrounds, and on a walk through the woods and along Kaler’s Pond, where the angry ghosts of double-crossed pirates are rumored to live. A bypass route is available for guests who wish to exit before the end. There will also be a variety of

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

The Over 50 Fair once again had a successful run on September 27th at the Melville Marriott. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes, some taught by local and national celebrities, covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island, and it once again had new features for its attendees. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. This year, 7 in Heaven Singles Events facilitated this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which had a seating area and opportunities to meet other singles,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6 and Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 did cooking demonstrations as well as “meet and greets.” Several beauty queens were in attendance, including the newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie. Edith Jason, age 80, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, taught a yoga class. Comedians Mark Brier and Howard Newman entertained at separate performances. In addition, there were a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, cardiology, and podiatry. additional bathrooms must be ADA-compliant. Ceilings, flooring, lighting and windows that no longer allow light into the classrooms must be replaced as needed districtwide. Just like in a home, upgrades must be made to the electrical, plumbing and heating systems that are functioning ineffectively and in some cases have outlived their anticipated life expectancy and are no longer cost-efficient to operate. Athletic fields must be repaired and renovated. Safety and security upgrades are also needed. While facilities maintenance has been included in the annual budget, the scope of work proposed in the bond is too large to include without impacting programs and significantly increasing taxes. In order for the community to have a greater voice in the decision-making process, the Board unanimously decided to present two propositions for consideration. Proposition 1: For a net cost to taxpayers of approximately $12,270,383, the district will be able to implement $42,963,526 worth of repairs and renovations to our district schools. If community residents approve Proposition 1, the cost for the average household will be approximately $131.76 per year, or approximately 36¢ per day. Proposition 1 includes additional classrooms and support service areas; districtwide repairs and renovations, including masonry work, ceilings, bathroom renovations, and plumbing and electrical upgrades; replacement of the currently damaged high school athletic turf field; and track and tennis courts renovations. Science labs upgrades, additional music and art space, expanded entrances to Walter G.
O’Connell Copiague High School and Deauville Gardens East, and security upgrades are also included in Proposition 1. Proposition 2: For a net cost to taxpayers of approximately $4,323,485, the district will be able to implement $15,138,254 worth of repairs and renovations to our district schools. If community residents approve Proposition 2, the cost for the average household will be approximately $46.43 per year, or approximately 13¢ per day. It is important to note that Proposition 2 is dependent upon the passage of Proposition 1. Proposition 2 includes additional repairs and renovations to windows, sidewalks, ceilings, lighting, flooring, plumbing, heating, and interior and exterior doors; bathroom renovations; replacement of high school gymnasium bleachers; natural field restoration at the middle school; middle school auditorium renovations; and masonry repairs, including sidewalks. As part of its character education program, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recognized students that displayed the character trait of kindness during the month of September. Each month, the school celebrates a different character trait that reinforces good behavior
such as responsibility, honesty, good judgment and respect. Teachers are provided with a monthly pledge to use in their classroom to help the students learn about that character trait. The winning students receive an award certificate, a prize and have their picture displayed on the bulletin board.

The Copiague School District Board of Education adopted a capital project bond referendum, which, if approved by voters on November 23rd, 2015, will enable the district to make major repairs and renovations districtwide. It is important to note that of the 95 percent of the scope of work eligible for New York State Building Aid, the district will receive 75.2 percent in state aid. Essentially, community residents will be asked to pay for 24.8 percent of the cost, greatly reducing the cost to taxpayers. Only by proposing a bond referendum will the district be able to take advantage of the New York State Building Aid to fund the majority of the scope of work. For the past several months, the Board of Education listened to the opinions and concerns of community residents, carefully analyzed the spacing issues and infrastructure needs of each school with the district’s architect, and explored all financial options currently available to further reduce the cost to taxpayers. The district’s schools were never designed to accommodate the current enrollment. The district’s oldest school is nearly a century old, while the newest school was built approximately 50 years ago. Additional instructional classrooms and support service space are needed. Students are learning in overcrowded classrooms and in rooms that were originally designed to be storage rooms. Music lessons are taking place in unused bathrooms or on the stage during lunch periods. Science labs are overcrowded, and outdated equipment must be replaced to meet the needs of today’s more rigorous science, technology, engineering and math curriculum. Music rooms must be expanded and

Student Spotlight As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an application deadline extension to October 16th, 2015 for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer
firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said
FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of

Deadline Extended academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a full-time or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer
activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend a chartered NYS community college; Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ location options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition
reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community. The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the upcoming semester has been extended to October 16th. For more information on the FASNY HELP program, please visit http://www.fasny.com/help
