CROWNING A BABY MOLAR

QUESTION: When would a dentist recommend a stainless steel crown to restore a baby molar? ANSWER: Only in specific cases, although it is a very good restorative technique. Possible indications for this procedure are: 1 - Extensive crown breakdown caused by decay 2 - Abnormal enamel 3 - Certain genetic conditions 4 - Following root canal treatment 5 - As part of a space maintainer or habit breaking appliance. 6 - As a restoration for a tooth which has fractured. The tooth is prepared by reducing all surfaces of the natural crown and then placing a pre-formed stainless steel crown over it. The result is a metal crown which is the size of the original tooth but which will not break or be subject to fracture. When it is ready to be replaced, it does so exactly like a natural tooth. The roots get progressively shorter as the permanent teeth mature and the unrooted crown just falls out.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. recently visited the Amityville Library to view new educational technology which was purchased through $5,000 in state funding he secured. The funding allowed the library to purchase iPads which can be used by patrons, including children. Children use the iPads, which are situated in a “Crayon Kiosk,” to play preloaded educational apps which teach them about subjects such as math,

science, reading, writing, and problem solving. According to the Amityville Library, between 300 and 400 children use the devices each month. “Interactive educational technology makes learning more exciting and engaging. Using this technology, the Amityville Library is making learning fun for hundreds of children,” said Senator Fuschillo. “On behalf of the Amityville Library, we thank Senator Fuschillo

for securing funding to enable us to purchase this technology. The iPads and Crayon Kiosk are widely utilized and extremely popular. Walk through the children’s section at anytime and you’ll see kids diligently concentrating on their educational games. They are a great addition to the Library and are helping us provide even better service to the community,” said Amityville Library Director Nora Schual.

Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

The Lupus Alliance of LIQ, home of the WalkAlong for Lupus, Long Island’s first and longest running lupus walk, will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary Walk-Along for Lupus on October 20th. The walk will be held in Eisenhower Park, Field #6, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m., and the walk beginning at 10 a.m., rain or shine. The minimum registration donation is $20; for a $50 donation, the walker also receives a T-shirt, a for a donation of $500 or more, the walker receives a Visa Gift Card. The Walk-Along for Lupus is a fun-filled day for the whole family that includes breakfast, lunch, live music, give-aways from sponsors and more. Picnic tables are set up for families to gather together and enjoy the day, as well as mingle with others who, like them, have lupus, or love someone who does. Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined

forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 year-old, nonsmoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is incredible,

and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. There isn’t any law in New York State that requires the use of a casket for cremation. There isn’t any law that prohibits a funeral home from renting a casket for cremation. If you have been told this you have been misled. It is the cemeteries and crematories that require a rigid receptacle for cremation. The reason the crematories require a rigid receptacle for cremation is so their personnel does not have to directly handle human remains. Being a funeral director for over 30 years, it never made a great deal of sense to me to purchase an expensive casket for cremation. Since I purchased my first funeral home, I have been renting caskets for cremation. In 1990 the casket companies finally developed a casket within a casket that could be rented for cremation. The interior casket is constructed of fiberboard and has the same type of interior as a regular casket. The exterior casket is constructed of solid oak. The rental unit is identical in appearances as that of an oak casket that costs $2500.00. The rental casket is used for the visitation at the funeral home; it is taken to the church for services and no one else other than the family knows the casket is rented rather than purchased. After all the services are completed, the interior casket slides out from the exterior casket for the cremation. The cost for the use of the rental casket is as follows: $400.00 for the interior casket which is cremated and $400.00 for the rental of the exterior casket. Of course, you can also purchase an inexpensive casket for a cremation for approximately the same amount of money, or you can purchase a casket that has been designed for cremation which is as expensive as all the other caskets.
