Farewell To A Legend I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over. Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era. But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships

and racking up countless milestones along the way. Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York. Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore. To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as

relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right? Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness. And what a privilege it was.

HOW GOOD ARE DENTAL LASERS? QUESTION: How good are today's dental lasers? ANSWER: Very good and they have paved the way for even better things to come. Their introduction may very well be the thing that changes the way many people view dental treatment. Lasers can be used effectively for not only preparing teeth, but also for bonding, for bleaching techniques and even for root canal therapy. Newly developed lasers are equivalent to the high-speed drill in their ability to make cavity preparations and to remove decay. In addition, procedures such as cavity preparation and etching can, in general, be done without any anesthetic. In extensive research it was found that less than 2% of patients treated by these new laser devices required any anesthetic during the procedure. In fact, after having the laser used – less than 2% even requested any anesthetic "just in case". The lasers are safe and effective, showing great promise for a future of comfortable and efficient dentistry.

Tops In New York Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School is proud to announce the selection of five students for state-level honors in music. The student-musicians were selected for the New York State School Music Association All-State Festival based upon their

performances at last year’s NYSSMA Solo Festival. The All-State ensembles, which are directed by renowned guest conductors, will perform in one of three concerts at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester on December 6th and 7th during the annual NYSSMA Winter Conference.

The district extends its congratulations to David Grinthal (All-State), Victoria Grinthal (AllState Alternate), Vinny Pensebene (All-State), Steven Szabo (All-State Piano Showcase Alternate) and Richard Taveras (AllState Alternate).

Palmer, a UCP of Suffolk Employment Connection participant, shared her personal journey as a person with a disability. Sueann has struggled with learning disabilities for her whole life and has had challenges in holding down a job. She was referred to The Employment Connection to assist her in securing employment. She worked with an employment specialist who helped her with creating a resume, submitting applications and improving her interview skills. On September 19th, the Amityville Union Free School District observed International Peace Day by joining in the global “Pinwheels for Peace” demonstration. District leaders, teachers, students and community members assembled on the front lawn of Amityville High School to read poems, deliver messages of peace and entertain the crowd with songs and a puppet show. The event culminated with the traditional pinwheel planting, as students inserted pinwheels along a spray-painted template of a peace sign. At Edmund W. Miles

Middle School, students decorated the hallways and grounds with messages of peace and unity. Teachers Kathryn Dodd, Janine Katsigiogis, Kelly Wilson and John Katsigiogis’ English classes all wrote symbolic peace poems on paper doves, pinwheels and on the pavement outside of the school. Jennifer Dibble’s ninth-grade art classes contributed to a large peace sign with their artwork. Paul Duguay and Michele Rudden’s classes added inspirational peace quotes in English and in Spanish to the sign, which was fixed to the front fence of the building. “The students and the

On September 6th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. hosted its 11th annual Old Bethpage Walk for Alzheimer’s & Coney Island Street Fair at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Approximately 100 teams and more than 800 individuals came out in support of Alzheimer’s research and awareness. The event began with a presentation of colors by the Butehorn Brothers VFW Post 4987 in Bethpage and a dedication ceremony for those who died during the September 11th, 2001 attacks. Louis Grottano, who serves as a caregiver for his wife who has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, was the event’s guest speaker. He spoke about the difficulties and challenges he faces caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. Walkers toured the village restoration’s scenic grounds and visited some of the historic structures during the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) event. At the end of the course, they planted flags in the Hope Garden in
