Operation SPLASH is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 with the goal of cleaning up and preserving Long Island’s south shore bays, beaches, and salt marshes. Since then, the organization has grown from one caring person to several thousand members across seven chapters dotted along Long Island’s South Shore. SPLASH’s seven cleanup boats run from March through November and are fully operated by volunteer captains and crew members. Over the past three decades, volunteers have retrieved

Most of what is pulled from the water comes from landbased sources — through storm drains and from storms blowing debris into the water. In efforts to reduce the impact of storm drain-sourced marine debris, Operation SPLASH designed and currently maintains the Mill Basin Debris Trap and advocated for other environmental legislation in New York State. Beyond collecting marine debris, Operation SPLASH

Flecktones. Wooten has been ranked as one of the top ten bass guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine. Victor Wooten will address the graduates following the conferral of this degree. Additionally, the College will bestow an Honorary Doctor of Music (Mus.D.) on long-time Long Island music educator William Fortgang. Fortgang, who served on the College’s faculty before retiring in 2020, came to the institution following decades of service in Long Island’s public schools. Graduates are encouraged to take photos and videos celebrating their graduation and share them on social media using #FTCGrad2020 or #FTCGrad2021. On September 12, 2021, Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, recently held its annual Open House. The weather and day could not have been more perfect. Under a beautiful sky, attendees numbering almost 500, enjoyed scheduled tours and demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, games, children’s activities, music and raffles. There were donkey cart rides, natural horsemanship and cattle lassoing demonstrations, mini horse dress ups, hugs with “Olaf “the chicken, cowboy games, and pumpkin painting. The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta & Soirée took place on Saturday, September 18 on the Great South Bay followed immediately by what is quickly becoming an annual favorite celebration at the Long Island Yacht Club benefiting local environmental non-profit Save The Great South Bay. One of the largest sailboat races on the Great South Bay, the Mayor’s Cup is organized by the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association in association with the South Bay Cruising Club. Returning Race Committee Chair John Davis oversaw the 7.8 nautical mile course which proved a tough battle for the skippers and their crews. The light and variable winds, that changed direction multiple times throughout the race, made for very difficult conditions to keep the boats sailing.

Then The Celebration…. The Soirée Directly following the Regatta and set to a stunning background with views to the Robert Moses Bridge, this year’s celebration was presented by York Analytical Laboratories at the Long Island Yacht Club. Celebrants were treated to live music by the ever-popular No Request Band along with tasty seafood delights served up by Bill and Maureen Zeller of Captree Clam. Under beautiful blue skies, Chuck Westfall of Thatch Island Oysters shucked hundreds of fresh Great South Bay oysters and guests dined on tasty treats from Coastal Kitchen, Mary Carroll’s, Ristorante Gemelli, Village Meat Market and Southside Fish and Clam. As they raised funds to support the organization’s three core programs, guests enjoyed an exclusive tasting of beautifully aged armagnacs and cognac with local importer Larry Reiter of Columbus Wine and Spirits. Others had their fortunes told by the Collective Consciousness of Oakdale. The Yacht Club’s grounds were decorated with a wide selection of native trees,

bushes and plants donated by Long Island Natives. The plants were repurposed to build a native garden in Amityville’s Nautical Park after the event. Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta was dedicated in memory of former Babylon Village Mayor Ralph A. Scordino who sadly passed away in October 2020. Mayor Scordino was a longtime supporter of the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta and an avid supporter of Save The Great South Bay, 501(c)3. Current Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams spoke of her predecessor’s love of the Bay and commitment to the environment. Congratulations to grand prize winner Jay Price who won the 9’ 6” Paddleboard donated by Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddle Board. A Multi-Class Regatta Captain Rick Latorre and his crew aboard Dark Star won line honors and came in first place in the Spinnaker Division. Eric Winberry and crew aboard Aleboat came in second place. The Non Spinning Division was won by a great sailing performance by Gary Sebouhian and his crew aboard S/V Pandemonium. Second place boat was Merry Ann and crew followed by Ed Anderson’s boat At Last. The Cruising Division was won by Chris Demmarco who sailed single handedly and was the only boat in his division to complete the race in such light wind. The Multi hull boats were sailing all over the racecourse looking for wind and was won by

Kim Schaefer and his crew on the Trimaran Trillium. Their competition was close behind aboard the Trimaran Getting There. There were a total of 15 boats racing in the four classes. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

while some remain homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent

housing. LICH has expanded their services. These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking. All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support. In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need. Tom Collings of Bellmore is swimming 9 miles to mark his 70th birthday. On Monday, October 11 (Columbus Day) beginning at 7:00am, if tides and weather permit. If not, the K-9 Mile Swim will be rescheduled. The Swim will end any time from 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm depending on water conditions. We hope to have Last Hope dogs as cheerleaders at the start of Tom’s swim- contingent on the dogs’ adopters being early risers. The event will take place at from Cold Spring Harbor to Lloyd Harbor and back, starting and ending at boat basin by Billy Joel Town of Huntington Park. Tom will be accompanied by 2 friends paddling kayaks.Andrew Pannullo, Tom’s massage therapist and Dr. David Komatsu, professor of medicine and martial arts teacher at Stony Brook University. Tom is a wellness advocate and dog lover. He recently lost his rescued dog Rosy to old age. Tom hopes his milestone birthday swim will promote pet adoptions and wellness along with demonstrating the importance of a healthy lifestyle for people, including his many

martial arts, tai chi and Zen students. Tom is asking people to sponsor his birthday milestone swim with a monetary pledge to Last Hope Animal Rescue in Wantagh to support Last Hope’s veterinary care and adoptions. Tom has spent his life helping people improve their health and mental outlook. Many of Last Hope’s dogs and cats are not rescued from rough situations until they are older, or even seniors. Their wellness is a concern. By providing thorough vet care for our mature pets including dentals, lab work, x-rays and other procedures when necessary, Last Hope strives to place them in loving homes where they will thrive for years to come. Monetary pledges of any size are appreciated.
