On Saturday, October 8th at Jones Beach, Outreach and the John Brower, Jr. Foundation will host the 2nd annual 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about substance and alcohol abuse in New York, bringing the community together while walking for a cause. The event honors the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk will support Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The Brower family formed the John Brower, Jr. Foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has

Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. Because, before we know it, we’ll be on to the next one.

Speaking during the ceremony were school administrators and local government officials. The afternoon continued as the varsity football team took on Centereach High School. Despite their best efforts, the Eagles

were unable to defeat the Cougars. During the halftime show, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School marching band, cheerleaders and step team treated the crowd to rousing performances. The festivities concluded with the district’s annual Hall of Achievement induction ceremony at the high school. This year’s inductees included Class of 1984 alumnus Jim Konen, Class of 1998 alumna Dr. Leslie Marino and Class of 1977 alumnus Craig Stadelman.

School pride was in the air on September 24th as Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School celebrated homecoming with festivities, including a parade, fair, football game and Hall of Achievement induction ceremony. The day’s events kicked off with a spirited parade that started at Great Neck Elementary School and ended at the high school. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is holding its 4th annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmindale Lanes in Farmingdale on October 22nd. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole who have viewed the facts of this horrible event on television and through the newspapers have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. He has been honored with the EMS Educator of the Year for Suffolk County and New York State and is a member of the Suffolk County REMAC committee. scouts, athletic teams and residents participated in the initiative. Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly joined the volunteers at Gilgo and commended them for their time and efforts to help keep the Town of Babylon beaches clean and beautiful. Cremation is permitted by the Catholic Church. Many people choose to be cremated nowadays because of personal preference, or because it is less expensive, or for other personal or family reasons. These are all acceptable reasons, and the only reason cremation would not be permissible for a Catholic would be if it were being done as a way of making a public statement about not believing in the resurrection of the body, which is one of the tenets of our faith. However, although cremation is permitted, the Church does have the clear preference that, whenever possible, cremation to take place after the Funeral Mass, so that the body of the deceased can be at the Mass. This is important because a human being is a bodysoul unity, and therefore the body is an integral part of our personhood. It is the physical body that encounters grace through the physcial signs of the sacraments: the body that was washed in Baptism, anointed in Confirmation, and nourished in the Eucharist should be present for the Funeral Mass. Nevertheless, if for some reason cremation does occur before the Funeral Mass, it is permissible to bring the cremated remains into church and have them at the Mass. Notice the term that is used: “cremated remains.” The Church asks that we sue this term instead of the term “cremains,” as the Church feels that “cremated remains” is more dignified as a reference to the mortal remains of the Christian body. An aspect of cremation that is often misunderstood is that the final disposition of the cremated remains must be exactly the same as for a body. Cremated remains must be buried in the ground in a cemetery, be entombed in a niche in a mausoleum or some other appropriate structure in a cemetery, or be buried at sea. It is not permissible for Catholics to keep the cremated remains at home, nor is it permissible to sprinkle the ashes (in the ocean or over a field, for example), nor may the ashes be divided up and placed into jewelry (I’m not kidding about that... it’s actually an option in the funeral industry). The Catholic Church teaches that the same reverence and dignity that is given to a dead body must also be given to the cremated remains. Thus, just as one would not keep a body at home, nor divide up a body into pieces, so too with the cremated remains in an urn - there must be a proper final disposition for those remains. Please keep this teaching of the Church in mind if you are considering cremation for yourself or for loved ones, and please feel free to contact one of the priests if you have further questions about it. ~ November 4, 2012

Promoting Peace Amityville Memorial High School students joined together on September 21st to celebrate the 2016 International Day of Peace, supporting the cause by forming a human peace sign on the school’s front lawn. Partnering with organizations Peace One Day and Pinwheels for Peace, students from art classes, the National Art Honor Society and the Warriors Awareness Program, also known as the Wac Pac, took part in a 45-minute ceremony on a sunny morning. It

was the seventh year that Amityville has participated in the international movement. The program featured song and poetry performances by students, who also shared quotes about peace from historical figures. The Wac Pac presented five peace rocks to students and staff, which will be then be passed on to others throughout the year in a “pay it forward” program to reward those who perform acts of kindness. After a performance of “God Bless America”

and a moment of silence, students and teachers placed the colorful pinwheels they made on the lawn in the shape of a peace sign. Art teacher Jayne Grasso, one of the organizers of the program, said the purpose was to teach students about tolerance and acceptance, while reminding them that their actions can make the world a better place. “This gives them an opportunity to take a stand and show that they can make a difference,” she said. “It’s a great way to start the year.”
