Odds & Ends the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly ﬂip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

On Thursday, November 9th, the non-profit agency Council for Unity will honor individuals that have made a significant impact on reducing gang violence in society at its ‘’Champions for Children Gala’’ at the Garden City Hotel. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco will be among the honorees. Sheriff DeMarco implemented Council for Unity at the Suffolk County Jail shortly after he took office in 2006 in an effort to reduce gang violence in the Riverhead Jail. It was the first correctional facility to embrace the program, which was developed by Robert DeSena nearly 40 years ago as a method to reduce gang-related crime in the New York City schools. Giving Peace a Chance Colorful pinwheels symbolized peace, harmony and unity at Amityville Memorial High School where International Peace Day was celebrated on September 20th. Hundreds of pinwheels were made by the school’s art students and handed out to attendees at the eighth annual celebration.

Students and teachers shared their wishes for peace through poems, readings and songs. At the end of the program, they came up on stage and tacked the pinwheels to two moveable bulletin boards, which were then moved to the lobby to be displayed for the rest of the month.

Student Imagine Halyard, who served as the emcee of the celebration, said the purpose of International Peace Day is to renew the dedication to peace and non-violence. The school partnered with two organizations, Pinwheels for Peace and Peace One Day. Art teacher Jayne Grasso

announced the winners of the pinwheel contest. Allen Ventura won most colorful, Alyssa Graham was most creative and Linda Mendosa won most meaningful. The Warriors Awareness Program, known as the Wac Pac, continued its tradition of spreading the message through peace

rocks. Two students were chosen to give out painted rocks to someone who has made a positive difference, and the hope is the rocks will continue to be passed along. Lena Vazquez presented one to Ashley Pico to thank Ashley for helping her adjust to a new school last year. Brianna Mazzilli gave the other

one to new principal Maria Andreotti as a welcoming gift. “Peace has to be at the forefront of everything, locally and globally,” Ms. Andreotti said. “I’m tremendously proud of the effort that has been put into this event and that is put in on a daily basis to spread peace.”
